Other Ten Percent 9/17/13

Sep 17 2013

Why don’t we just go for doing this for a little while. I’m still not sure it’s really the most effective format for this anymore but it is the routine and I’ve kinda missed just having a routine of late. Here are ten links that I say a few things about from the internet.

Netflix uses piracy stats to choose its programming
So I’m mostly just…shocked that Netflix had the balls to admit this? I mean it’s not like these statistics are hard to come by. You really think Netflix is the only one looking at these numbers? You think Community’s made it off the chopping block so many seasons in a row if nobody was going “yeah but clearly SOMEBODY’S watching. Jesus look how many seeders this show has” behind closed doors? Netflix is just in the unique position of not having advertisers for customers so they’re free to say they pay attention to formats that don’t make advertizers any money. Has HBO copped to this yet? On the one hand being over a barrel with Cable providers puts them in an even worse position to talk about this but on the other hand I’ve heard that Game of Thrones is the most pirated show on television so many times I legitimately think it might be in their press packet.

Extreme Puritan baby-naming
“Has-descendents” seems like a pretty cocky thing to name your kid. Also, way to put pressure on them in the bedroom 17th century puritan parents. Do you suppose they were originally going to name his “Has-ancestors” and then they were like “no, wait, that’s OBVIOUS” and changed it at the last second?

Sailor Moon gets retro-cool with these space pulp redesigns
So I kinda love these redesigns but I’m mostly posting it so I have an excuse to link to my new favorite novelty Twitter account. Do you also know too much about both social media AND the original 90’s Sailor Moon cartoon? Then you will enjoy a Twitter account filled with hypothetical episodes from a remake of the series that discusses what the lives of the girls from Sailor Moon would be like in the digital age. Also, why was I not cooler in high-school? IT IS A MYSTERY.

Citi Bike fan fiction
More startups should have fan fiction. I mean they all basically do (they’re called business plans! ZING!) but they should actually call it that and just go whole hog. Instead of just really obviously trying to get bought up the next social media startup somebody launches (so…in two or three minutes) should just write some really graphic slash fiction about their company and Facebook getting it on.

Graffiti Briefcase Conceals Street Stenciling System
I am a big fan of secret compartments in general and secret compartments that contain mechanisms are probably my favorite kind of secret compartment. Let’s all go around the room and discuss our top five favorite types of secret compartments. These are the types of fun party games I would have played in high-school if people hung out with me a lot which, again, they mysteriously did not.

DIY Pneumatic Tube System For Delivering Teeth to the Tooth Fairy
This shows the kind of admirable love for lying to your children that I’ve come to think of as the hallmark of a responsible parenting strategy. Good work random DIY tech enthusiast, your commitment to the bit puts every parent that ever ate the milk and cookies left out for Santa to shame.

Flashy Music Video For ‘Lose Yourself to Dance’ by Daft Punk
My one complaint about this video is that nobody is describing it as taking place in a disco spaceship even though it OBVIOUSLY DOES. Sure, that’s arguably more of a problem with the reporting but since it’s so universal I can only conclude that Daft Punk needed to somehow make it MORE of a disco spaceship.

The Male Profession’s Female Relative
“Paris, 1919. The world’s leaders have gathered to rebuild from the ashes of the Great War. But for one woman, the City of Light harbors dark secrets and dangerous liaisons, for which many could pay dearly.” And that’s just the synopsis for the FIRST ONE of these. They’re basically all gold. Probably the greatest list post on Hairpin since they discovered women smiling while eating salad.

What the atomic tests of the 1950s looked like from Los Angeles
If God didn’t want us to do open air nuclear testing why did he make it look so awesome? What do you mean I can’t be president anymore?

The ‘Breaking Bad’ Spinoff ‘Better Call Saul’ With an 80s Style Intro
I continue to be a bad TV viewer because I’m way more excited about everything relating to a Better Call Saul spin-off than I am about the actual end of Breaking Bad.
