Other Ten Percent 4/29/13

Apr 29 2013

Woooo Spring cleaning. If I can just find a safe place on our walls to put up some bike hooks the place is basically done. I mean it’s been livable since like a week after we moved in last year but there’s been a few too many boxes stacked up in our bedroom to like, let people drop off their cotas and use both rooms in a party. Hopefully we’ll be able to do that now. That does mean I still don’t have that web project ready though. I’m kinda dragging my feet on the part where I actually implement it, not because it’s hard but because it’s kinda boring to type up all the stuff I have written down and format it correctly for the story. Why that is will become more obvious if I ever actually share it with you guys. For now though, just links.

Yesteryear’s newspapers of tomorrow
So this isn’t quite temporal empathy (and since Lucy retweeted that I feel a lot of pressure to have that actually, you know, mean something eventually) but I do think that noticing how much the futurists of yesteryear got right is basically always superior to pointing at all the stuff they got wrong and laughing. There’s some weirdly accurate genius in here, “newspaper delivered to you by your radio every day” isn’t as far off from Twitter on our phone as you’d think it’s just that the intervening steps revealed some easier ways to do basically the same thing.

Physicists believe it’s possible to build a perpetual motion machine
So, again, doesn’t really take a whole lot of courage to bet AGAINST perpetual motion but I look forward to figuring out what part of advanced physics we had wrong that made us think this was going to work.

Augmented Reality: Robert Scoble, man-about-town in Google Glass
This is a terrible reason to bet on Google Glass but the people who are excited about it sure seem a lot less insufferable than the people who are talking about how doomed it is. Actually more than that people who hate it seem to basically say “people will never stop finding this creepy and Orwellian” and they OBVIOUSLY will about 5 seconds after Google announced the thing costs less than $500.

SUB-MACHINE GUN
Man, you could write a short story about any of these and odds are they’d all be better than the source material.

Bollywood film trailer hauls out pretty much every warhorse in the stable
So after years of finding Bruce Sterling’s Bollywood obsession utterly baffling because it seemed like it was in no way applicable to the American entertainment landscape I finally figured out that Bollywood isn’t the future of movies it’s the future of TELEVISION and now all of these posts look like what NBC’s programming block will be 18 months from now.

EDC: What I Carry Every Day
I’d love to read Warren Ellis’s “This is how I work” article for Lifehacker. Mostly because I imagine there’d be an extended bit where he yelled at various productivity systems until he somehow actually made software cry.

Also, my mom just sent me this video which I assume is from the White House Correspondant’s Dinner and which purports to ba about Steven Spielberg’s new Obama bio-pic for a joke that really shouldn’t work they make it land better than I could have possibly imagined.
