Other Ten Percent 3/20/13

Mar 20 2013

So after a two month break from writing basically anything between my birthday and vacations and Jane’s wedding and just being lazy I’m finally back to getting some writing done. I ditched the AV Club list conceit (still planning to write scripts for like half that list but…it kinda started seeming like a stunt to impress you guys more than a writing exercise) and made up a full list of stuff I want to work on I probably SHOULD be working on and now I’m doing that with all the free time I don’t have. I’m also doing this list of links!

Today in lessons about ubiquitous capture: ubiquitous capture can’t just work for the people who’re doing the capturing.

“He’s Guilty,” Cop Rock
You know, I know a lot of weird TV facts but nothing seems to so shock and weird people out as telling them about the existence of Cop Rock.

3D Printed Business Figures
I cannot even pretend like this is a trend that’s going to take off but for now it’s totally adorable.

Google Poetics (GooglePoetics) on Twitter, via @jar0n
Some of the best poetry I’ve seen in my life but of course the poet is the curator and not Google. I keep wondering when the New Aesthetics going to pick up on that and I THINK they have but I honestly can’t be sure through all the “the machine sees/thinks/feels” rhetoric.

Amazing Backwards/Forwards Video of a Man Strolling in Jerusalem
You know at first I thought they relied too much on the gimmick and then I got super into the gimmick and then I wished they’d somehow done the gimmick EVEN MORE.

THE PRIVATE EYE: Leaving Comics Publishers Behind
I could link directly to the page where you can buy/download a new Brian K. Vaughn comic that’s really great (it’s like he set out to write the ubiquitous surveillance comic I never actually get around to writing but did a really strong hit of Transmetropolitan before he started) but the Warren Ellis commentary is a real value add so you get that too.

The Peanut Gallery, Add Intertitles to Silent Films Using Voice Recognition in Chrome
Google is a really weird company you guys. Like imagine if Apple had developed Siri and then decided to raise public awareness about it by releasing it as a thing to do drunk at parties. You basically can’t imagine that because it’s the most absurd thing ever only Google JUST DID THAT TODAY and nobody seems to think anything but, “huh.”
