Other Ten Percent 1/31/13

Jan 31 2013

Hooray for quasi palindrome dates! Okay so today is dedicated purely to writing Adventure Time stuff. I mean, after writing up OTP. Weirdly that doesn’t seem to sap my energy for fiction the way that writing up stuff I actually get paid for does.

Guide to this year’s crop of 3D printers
Is this the year that you will buy a 3D printer? I am saying yes to…4 of you. The rest of us will be waiting until there’s an odd lull in our periodic computer purchases, we come into a few thousand bucks unexpectedly or these things drop under $500. Still, here’s a good survey of what $500 will buy you 2-3 years from now.

“Unbroken Down” in Detroit
Ruin Porn is so last year. Probably next year again though so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

“You don’t have to be a qualified pilot … The person could come from a modelling background, or…”
I think one of the reasons “drones as surveillance state” bores the fuck out of me, besides that it’s like number 7 on the list of surveillance state-y things to worry about, is that there are so many more weird and genuinely disturbing aspects to drones. It goes against the internet talking head narrative that more access always = better but I’m kinda more disturbed by the fact that anybody can how fly an (albiet fairly small) plane around and into whatever they would like than that GASP people can have cameras.

Game of tag has been going for 23 years
I now realize just how much I’ve given up on my dreams. I could have been the person in this story and it hurts all the more because all it would have taken was more commitment to the bit.

Aether Opens San Francisco Clothing Store Made of Three Stacked Shipping Containers
Okay so that block needs to be officially renamed the William Gibson Shopping Center because this is like the third business run out of a shipping container within 400 feet and, honestly, given the place that flash freezes ice cream I’m not even sure it’s the weirdest one.
