Other Ten Percent 1/25/13

Jan 25 2013

You might have noticed I didn’t write an Adventure Time episode yesterday. I kinda got into a tech writing mode in the morning and remembered some extra work I should have done earlier so I decided to do that instead. Then I was super out of it and didn’t manage that either. Weird day. I spent most of today at a press thing for an MMO. It was a super weird day because while I learned a ton about this game between embargos and unfinished content and stuff they just plain weren’t supposed to be talking to me about I kinda have no idea what to write about it that anybody would really care about. PR for games is weird. You’re basically watching a rough cut of a movie a year out from its completion and then telling people if you think the movie’s going to be any good or not. “It could be, the director said it will have a lot of things good movies have and there’s a really cool part I can’t tell you about where a thing happens. Anyway we’ll see later when the movie comes out. Okay bye.” Here are some links.

Let’s build a massive meta McDonald’s in Times Square
Yes. I have been saying stuff about fast food and Molecular Gastronomy since I totally missed the point of the Fast Food Nation chapter about the flavor science lab and thought it sounded AWESOME.

Man vs. Subway, A Challenge to Race Off One Subway Train & Catch It in Another Station
I think subway systems should be rated entirely on how hard it is to beat this challenge. I’ve beaten this challenge against the Muni by walking before. Though I came to despise a lot about the MTA before I left New York one of the things that annoyed me about them was the it was basically impossible to win this challenge (unless you were taking a bus or something in which case God have mercy on your soul).

Twitter launches video sharing app
“the middle ground between [x popular thing] and [y popular thing]” is one of those warning bell phrases from tech products for me so I’m not exactly convinced this is going to catch on. I wish it would though because they’re right that there’s a video niche that neither gifs nor youtube serves very well. Just not sure it’s large enough to fit a product into.

HOWTO shift any song into a major key
Weirdly the fact that this turns out to be super easy to do just makes it MORE interesting to me.

Is this really a 300 million-year-old machine gear?
Okay so, obviously not. But wouldn’t it be awesome if this was how we discovered aliens, like we just had absolutely no way to explain how this thing came to exist except that there was intelligent life on this planet 300,000,000 years ago.

Child of the 90s | Internet Explorer
Okay I have seen this like on 8 different feeds today and the praise has been widespread. Why? Seriously why do people have nostalgia for the early 90’s in general? More to the point though why do people have such nostalgia for freakin’ pogs that you’re supposed to forget that IE was and is a shitty browser? As near as I can tell the message of this ad is “Remember things from the past and how you have blind nostalgia for them even though most of them were objectively crap? We’re from the past and mostly crap too so give us a little of that sweet sweet action.” AND IT’S WORKING.

Massive Chicago Warehouse Fire Leaves Building Shrouded in Ice
Man, can more buildings be on fire in the middle of winter because this looks like one of the best movie sets I’ve ever seen and it turns out it’s actually just real-life. Weird because the post apocalyptic movie I assumed it was from was going to be awesome.

Facebook Focus Group, A Look at Where Facebook Gets its Ideas
What’s weird is that given a lot of the people I’ve met in San Francisco I’m not entirely convinced that this EXACT conversation didn’t happen at a focus group for Facebook at some point.
