Other Ten Percent 1/22/13

Jan 22 2013

I’m writing this up early because once I’m done and I shut down my computer I’m going to marathon write a first draft of the Children’s Hospital script I’ve been kicking against. I am warning you right now that even the first draft will probably not be very good as it will contain multiple [a joke goes here] notes and probably since it’s an absurd time travel story I’m trying to tell in 11 minutes there will be internal continuity issues to work out. Here are links you can read instead of (or in addition to!) reading that.
REM’s “Losing My Religion” shifted into a major scale
I have never actually been a huge fan of Losing My Religion (as a song of course, as a way of life…) and changing it to major key doesn’t actually fix that. It does however make the video immensely more amusing and it’s just downright technically impressive.

Design of the Week: Caged Heels
So 3D printed fashion is still clearly in its LOOK WHAT I CAN DO phase and that’s cool and everything. They kinda need to move out of it though and one of the things I’ve noticed that’s maybe a way forward but maybe way to gimicky is stuff like this where there’s kind of a weird optical illusion based on the way you thing shoes are constructed and the way this thing is ACTUALLY constructed. Also can 3D printed fashion stop concentrating so much on 3D printed heels because I’m pretty sure we haven’t yet had the material sciences breakthrough that keeps that from being HELLISHLY uncomfortable.

Celestial Sphere Pops
Oh my Christ I really wish I could figure out how to make these because while they aren’t really very expensive I have no real need for them and mostly just want to know how it’s done.

Spreading Ground
A really detailed history of weeds at Oxford. Well, one specific weed. You have to be really careful of scope creep on BLDGBLOG.

Guerrilla indie feature film shot at Walt Disney World
I wonder if the business plan for this thing actually had a section where they wrote down “and then Cory Doctorow covers it on BoingBoing and we go viral” weirdly I kinda don’t want to see this movie UNLESS they were that mercantile about the whole thing, it would imply a level of craft and dedication that’d outweigh “guerrilla indie feature” in my pro/con list.

Functional Iron Man gauntlet shoots lasers powerful enough to pop a balloon
I have a lot of problems with a specific Parks and Recreation plot-line where Adam Scott buys himself a batman costume because haha nerds. If he had bought an Iron Man costume instead I would have had zero objections.

Ars Electronica prize: call for entries
I’m writing this up early so I could probably find a post with more content if I waited until the end of the day but I want to knock this out early and leave some time for stuff to aggregate for tomorrow’s entry since it’s a holiday and 90% of all posts are going to be about the inauguration. There’s really only one reason I’m posting this and that’s that there’s a really solid code art community joke by Bruce Sterling at the top of it. The Ars Electronica entry pr stuff is…okay if that’s what you’re in to.

I’m really sorry but I’ve been doing this in my head all morning and now you’re all doomed to do it yourselves for the rest of the week.

Hundreds is a stylish iOS puzzler
You know I really didn’t like this puzzle idea when I had it described to me but now that I’m hearing it in more detail with accompanying video it makes a whole ton of sense to me and I’m actually going to grab it later this week if I end up having some free time.
