Other Ten Percent 1/11/13

Jan 11 2013

So the upload was screwed up but the first two pages of a Children’s Hospital script are now up over on Million Words and hopefully that will be closer to 10-15 pages by the time you read this at which point I would pretty much be done. There are also the usual links for you guys though and that’s probably what you ACTUALLY want to read from me so here those are.

The Y: The Last Man movie is back on (for now)
Okay so this is still never going to happen so I’m not trying to get anybody excited but of all the versions of this movie that weren’t going to happen this is the hypothetical version I would be most excited about since Brian K. Vaughn was still actually scripting it and HBO was thinking of doing it as a mini-series.

iPhone Quick Release System That Attaches to Your Wrist
Oh man I totally wanted to invent this in high-school, but (and this is not a joke I make all that often) I also wanted to ever get laid so I decided to not try and combine Batman gadgets with having a cellphone on the off chance a girl would be SUPER into that.

The mysterious Area 51 graveyards where secret military technologies go to die
Secret Military tech graveyards. Another in our ongoing series: Oh of course that exists, why did I never think about how that had to exist?

Reality is too real until it’s not real enough
The best explanation I’ve seen for the reason some people are flipping out about 48FPS. Short version: a lot of people are flipping out because of the “authenticity” of the problems with 24FPS but there are also legitimate problems since film-makers haven’t yet adapted to ways the new technology actually changes the way you see detail and lighting in movies.

If The Times Can Talk About Lindsay, So Can I
Okay so I actually think the AVClub has slightly better commentary on this jam, but I can link to The Hairpin much more easily. Its comments also don’t have a weird under-current of misogyny as they try and blame the only girl in the story for everything wrong with a movie that’s obviously doomed from the word go, so here we are. Let’s talk about the article itself though because HOOOOO BOY. I mean Lohan is crazy, this is basically a given now. But I actually think the “Oh LiLo NO” factor is maybe the least interesting thing going on here. There’s also a director who’s clearly EQUALLY insane and also for some reason thinks betting it all on Lohan is a great plan despite warning signs aplenty. Then you’ve got Brett Easton Ellis over in the corner writing a plot that sounds like self-parody but isn’t since he’s incapable of that and then projecting his own issues on a random male pornstar he’s decided to cast as his lead. The weird result is an article where the only real sympathetic figure is a male pornstar who’s biggest sin is figuring out the movie will be a disaster and running off to do some work on his off days in the much more stable industry of pornography. Well that’s not true everybody is at turns sympathetic, that’s why the article is so good. He’s the only one who comes off looking like somebody I’d want to be in the same room with for more than 3 minutes though.

‘Knife Guys’ Will Ferrell & Ryan Gosling Shill Knives on Late Night TV
So once you get the bit the sketch is kinda done but I’m in favor of any premise that involves repeatedly interupting Jimmy Kimmel.

Worldbuilding is the main reason so many of us fall in love with fantasy
Yeah this seems like a pretty solid thesis. I mean we’re not really there for Tolkein’s prose. The problem with this theory is that you’d probably want to read the Symarilion if that was true and that’s so untrue I can’t be bothered to look up how to spell that book.

This Doctor Who 50th anniversary special will feature a five-Doctor reunion
So a lot of people ask me what they should do when they finish the modern Doctor Who…okay like two people have asked me that and it was 4 years ago. Still. The old Doctor Who is fascinating in a “this is weirdly unformed TV history” sort of way but the big finish audio productions are actually WAY MORE INTERESTING. Seriously this is like their 18th special where a ton of doctors have hung out together and they also do a bunch of stuff with the 8th doctor who was in the shitty Fox movie and nothing else. They’re just solid ways to expand Doctor Who AND you can just listen to them on your commute instead of having to sit down and watch them.
