Other Ten Percent 12/20/12

Dec 20 2012

Nikki just gave me early Christmas presents and they are AWESOME! She is going home to spend the holidays with her family tomorrow though and that is less awesome. I found links on the internet and they are somewhere between those two extremes on the awesomeness scale.

Cat Transit System, A Custom Cat Mobility Tube by Because We Can

Oh My God I suddenly am totally in support of the idea of cats. I usually lean pretty heavily toward Dog but this brings them just about even.

The Social Web: End Of The First Cycle

Sooooo I kinda feel like this is all totally correct. I know there’s been a pretty swift reaction against the “sky is falling” folks about Instagram where everybody’s pretty convinced it’ll turn out to be a fine business decision and…I’m less convinced. This feels like the year where everybody started to feel the kind of grim inevitability they feel for large institutions like government or banks for Facebook and Twitter and social networking in general. In fact I sorta think that’s what all the “the internet is dead and totally ruined compared to when I found it and it was still cool” editorials I’ve seen around lately. We all still use social networking but nobody actually musters up any enthusiasm about it anymore and in the absence of anything “next” showing up yet there’s just this weird sense of decay the internet hasn’t really gone through in about a decade and everybody’s flipping out.

A startup that will store your data in space — and on Mars

This is my new favorite totally useless startup idea. It’s probably the purest expression of selling a future and not a product that I’ve ever seen outside of a Steve Jobs reality distortion field.

A Crane Operator’s View of Toronto at Night

Considering I don’t have to deal with the terrible fear of heights it would induce in real life this is awesome.
