Other Ten Percent 11/20/12

Nov 20 2012

Aaaand I am once again grinding away on some work this week trying to get a full week’s worth of stuff done by Wednesday morning because of Thanksgiving. Be thankful that you’ll probably have five posts from me this week anyway.
In Which I Get Beaten Up By Books
So it turns out that Warren Ellis is Jane if she were a british man who was CONSTANTLY drunk. Now that this post pretty much conclusively proves that by just throwing out the futurist manifesto for kicks I’m sort of amazed I never thought of it before.

New York Noir: The Filming Locations of Pickup on South Street (NY, You’ve Changed)
I love it when Scouting NY does old-timey comparison shots. They’re so atemporal it’s like Bruce Sterling and location scouting had a baby.

Hatsune Miku, posthuman pop star
I’ve talked about the virtual pop idol in Japan once or twice before I think but this story is full of way more hilarious/amazing details to amuse your friends with. It’s basically the entire weirdness of Japan in microcosm.

Paul, the artistic robot
While the methodology sounds vaguely interesting I feel like the narrative of “artist programs robot to make himself irrelevant” is way more interesting.

Slick futuristic anime about the hunt for a legendary food truck is the greatest car commercial ever
I would watch a full movie of this without a moment’s hesitation. Also, why is japan the only country that seems appropriately psyched for AR? Like they’ve been psyched for five years and I’ve yet to see an American TV show or even a movie that really does consumer AR well.

Retro travel posters for the world’s top cryptozoological hot spots
I can think of quite a few worse reasons to travel.

In a town where horror movie tropes are real, babysitting is serious business
You know I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me that the way forward for horror after Cabin in the Woods would just be a ton of smart horror parodies. While it misses the point of Cabin in the Woods pretty substantially it’s a lot better than most of what passes for horror movies over the last few years.

Photos: A Bartending Demo at 1901, An Exclusive Disneyland Lounge
You know Cory Doctorow is busy when somebody else covers bartending demos in Disneyland.

So celebrity gossip basically bores me at this point since there’s like 3 new celebrities in the past half decade that are of even mild interest to gossip columnists. For that reason however I find the industry of celebrity gossip to be pretty amazing divorced of the actual content it puts out. So join me won’t you as Rhianna traps 150 journalists on a constant series of maddening red-eye flights, grants them little or no access to the actual celebrity they’re ostensibly writing about and then, I’m assuming, cackles to herself as they all begin to write bizarre stream of consciousness rants in the style of celebrity blogging ABOUT THEMSELVES. I take it all back Rhianna, you may be the greatest performance artists of the 21st century and you don’t even have to perform anything to do it.
