Other Ten Percent 10/17/12

Oct 17 2012

So today’s OTP has a lot less stuff from off the RSS reader but that’s because basically everything I actually liked today came off of my RSS reader. This “posting things I actually like and spent time paying attention to” thing is going pretty well so far.

A massive and illegal geoengineering project has been detected off Canada’s west coast [Geoengineering]
Man you gotta love how nobody saw this coming. I mean there were UN resolutions banning it and the easiest way to get the UN to agree on something is to have all the member countries think that nothing will ever come of it. Not really judging since I wasn’t expecting a massive scale geoengineering project to be chilling up in Canada myself but it’s stil super weird.

New features in Glympse, a location-sharing mobile app I like
Am I the only person that thinks this seems actually moderately useful? Probably yes because everybody else can probably just deal with people showing up when they show up to things.

Scientists discover a planet in Alpha Centauri, the star system nearest Earth [Space]
I already posted this on Twitter but seriously am I the only one that actually gets WORRIED every time something like this comes out? Turns out there are Earth like planets everywhere but none of them seem to have life on them ANYWHERE that wants to talk to us. I’m seriously hoping that radio waves turn out to be some shortlived fad in human history and we get something way better it’s “natural” to switch to because otherwise it’s like we keep discovering a galaxy full of cars and all of them are mysteriously empty and it’s just plain creepy.
