Other Ten Percent 10/5/12

Oct 05 2012

Blarg I gotta get back on the ball. After a pretty productive Monday I just haven’t been doing much of anything at all. I think this weekend I’m going to be writing all the things I have to write for Dance Party at the End of the World this year (which is actually shaping up to be a decent amount of stuff) so maybe that’ll get me back in a productive mindset. I also have these links for you.
At the New York New Aesthetic show
I mean I pretty much legally had to cover this considering how I couldn’t shut up about the New Aesthetic for a while there.

Entertainment Weekly print edition comes with a ‘smartphone-like Android device’
So we now live in a world where people just put smartphones into magazines. Also, can we take a moment to discuss how the CW is a network that seems to do absolutely everything right except the actual programming? Like I decided to watch the season premiere of Supernatural today and HEY it turns out they have a better web player with more of their episodes and less commercials that Hulu. Also they’re airing Dr. Horrible on TV. They’re basically the network every internet nerd who yells about how networks just don’t get it is asking for except nobody watches them and they are in a DISTANT last place in the network wars. Hooray! More 2 Broke Girls on CBS.

Cooking Chicken with Christopher Walken & Richard Belzer
I can’t decide if Christopher Walken is funnier or less funny now that he’s firmly in on the joke. This is called the Weapon of Choice Conundrum and yes it has been bothering me for basically a decade now.

Japanese Execution Chamber
I saw this a few days back and, like Warren Ellis, I wasn’t sure exactly what I found so fascinating about it. I guess it’s just that it seems like such a bizarre and unjust system since I’m not inside of it? Culturally I mean. If I was literally inside the death row prison system in Japan I think I’d still find it pretty bizarre and unjust.

Can anybody in the Star Wars universe read and write? At all? [Star Wars]
Oh my God this explains so much. I know from extended universe canon (sup Knights of the Old Republic games?) that this isn’t actually true but I’m just deciding it is at least for the movies. It actually ties up so many plot holes and makes that whole universe function so much better if reading is a lost art in the Star Wars galaxy.

Self-portrait of a tree as a young sapling
This is amazing but also seems like tree torture.

How the Real Atlantis was Drowned [Archaeology]
I have no idea why we’re so fascinated by Atlantis when there’s so much awesome ACTUAL history people just don’t bother to discuss.
