Other Ten Percent 9/20/12

Sep 20 2012

Oh hey I’ve already got 10 things….well, 9 things and then a music video it is worth sharing so that counts. I am having a productive day which is I guess what happens when you spend a whole day doing a bunch of groundwork for stuff and not finishing any of it. Also here are the links I was referencing earlier. Also, happy birthday Nikki!
I didn’t expect the world to be so big
Okay so I need to stop prefacing every XKCD I like with “I surprisingly like this one” because it’s just straight up an awesome comic on the regular now as he increasingly experiments with weirder and weirder formats for this stuff.

Automated system to identify and repair potential weak-spots in 3D models before they’re printed
There’s a lot of 3D printing stuff going on today for some reason and while I don’t really know why it feels like 3D printing is moving from being magic to being sort of boringly mundane and there’s something in that that I think is actually super valuable for 3D printing as technology.

Podcast List, 19sep12
I’m somehow containing my shock that Warren Ellis doesn’t listen to a lot of comedy podcasts. However this is still a great list of non-fiction podcasts you might not be listening to yet.

On Speechwriting
Yes the Hairpin I would like to explore the problems of authorship in political speech craft, thank you so much for asking. Also I legitimately thought this was a Wonkette post when I was looking at it on my reader.

i wrote this comic with a friend who used the phrase “sloppy seconds” because she thought it referred to when you’re at a buffet and you get seconds and the food is all mushed up now. that doesn’t relate to this comic, i just thought it was ADORABLE
I’m mostly linking this because it links to the Adventure Time Game Jam but the comic except is also pretty rad.

The Economist Speculates on 3D Piracy
Like I said, the dreary realities of 3D printing seem to be coming to the fore and a whole Economist piece where they worry BEFORE it destroys whole industries about the intelectual property implications of 3D printing seems like the foremost example of it.

XOXO: Maker Love, Not Thwart
You know I’m still not sure exactly how I feel about this conference but after seeing about 4 different “you had to be there the vibe was JUST INCREDIBLE” posts on my RSS reader I’m just happy to know what the hell this thing even was.

A brain scan on ecstasy
A lot of stories about ecstasy going on lately as well. I have even less to say about that as a broad theme.

Why did it never occur to me that the problem with Flying Lotus was that he didn’t have Cyriak do all his videos for him?
