Other Ten Percent 9/13/12

Sep 13 2012

I had a not at all busy day where I played video games. They were fun! Also I watched some TV and wrote a few notes about another thing. Then I forgot to write OTP until like 10:30. Still found enough links though so we’re fine. Oh hey look here are those internet links now.
Skeleton found at dig may be Richard III
Come on history. You could have at least given me a full month between letting me know about this centuries old mystery and solving it.

Obama, No. 44
So this article on Obama is just intriguing in general but I actually find the profile of what it’s like to be president that starts forming as the article goes on more interesting than the “what’s Obama like” fun facts scattered throughout.

you can argue that clark is merely superman suffering a psychotic break and pretending he doesn’t have powers, begging for relief from the constant shouting of planet earth and a silence that will never come, but that’s – that’s awful. that’s just awful
Every single part of this comic including that title and the alt text is pretty much verbatim my thoughts on Superman.

Broaden Your Horizons by Randomizing Your Reading Material [Learning]
So I’m going to start working some of this stuff into my daily routine. I kind of reject the idea that having news that’s tailored to my points of view closes off my mind since most news tends to recycle and comment on anything it can find meaning I hear about almost everything anyway and the quality of news from basically everywhere on any ideological axis is kind of garbage. But the rut gets boring after a while and I feel like OTP more than most parts of my life has suffered from me being caught in a news loop.

Music label becomes tech-art curatorial outfit
This is so inevitable I’m kind of shocked more music labels haven’t mutated into weird shit like this.

Hacks that never happened
Well that’s certainly an ultra-specific list I’m surprised I haven’t seen sooner.

Apple EarPods hands-on
In my opinion this was basically the only interesting thing at today’s Apple keynote. The new iPhone aspect ratio’s going to fuck some shit up, as will the new proprietary connector but the addition of LTE doesn’t excite me the way it does phone wonks and I think the 2.5 inch nano screen is a step backwards that shows Apple still doesn’t know quite what to do with that part of it’s hardware universe. There’s some small chance the new version of iTunes isn’t just minimalism on the interface level and they finally bothered to recode it from the hulking pile of jury-rigged resource hogging bullshit it’s been for the past 5-6 years but I kind of doubt it. That means that new and less shitty earbuds are basically the only full unequivocal good out of the new announcements.
