Other Ten Percent 8/27/12

Aug 27 2012

So here’s the thing. I have, traditionally, found that writing OTP brings me more energy than it takes. When I take a week off of writing it I typically just feel kind of antsy and lazy and don’t really accomplish a whole ton and so I don’t really take vacations from OTP that much anymore because I feel shittier not spending the half an hour to just do it. That being said this is going to be a weird week. I’m going to be moving tomorrow and tuesday and once I move it may be a week or two before I’ve got regular internet at the new place and that all adds up to a pretty grim forecast for OTP. I’m not going to say for certain that I won’t be doing any more posts this week because I would like for that to not be true but if the update schedule is pretty strange for the next few days know that I’m fine. I just got super tired from moving boxes.
Lights Out
I still think of it as a strange sort of defeat whenever I post a video that’s just pretty to OTP and I can’t tell you why. At some point the blog’s mission kind of morphed and now I’m not sure I have a really good handle on what exactly it is I do this for but when I stare too hard at that it saps my enthusiasm for the doing the blog at all so I just sort of skip the question. I am sorry I am so contemplative about the nature of the blog today. I really don’t know what that’s about.

The Ragtime Gals: Jimmy Fallon’s Reggae Barbershop Quartet
Once again I have nothing to say about a brilliant Jimmy Fallon bit besides my shock that there are now brilliant Jimmy Fallon bits in the world.

The Nike Hyperdunk+ basketball shoe measures vertical jump,…
Ben Bashford’s kinda killing it today and I think that’s because there is just a TON of embedded sensor/AR products hitting consumers lately. Apparently we’re at that part of the adoption curve.

The mass musical hysteria that predated Beatlemania [Secret History]
Fairly certain we’ve done a Lisztomania link before but I see no reason not to link it every time somebody does a good write up of it.

How the entire world’s media got a Nature cover story totally, utterly wrong
Science reporting is hard you guys. You have to like actually read things and then think about them for three seconds before you just post on the internet that somebody invented a dream recording machine.

Surface Detail by Tom Beddard (subBlue)
I have no idea why but this video starts to fill me with a creeping sense of dread about a minute in. I think it’s only partially the music and it’s more that it’s a really uncomfortably direct and weird look at infinity. Try full-screening it and contemplating your place in the universe. Side effects include spending too much time talking about the nature of your blog.

Little Boxes by Joelle Aeschlimann (ECAL) is a music box concept…
Okay so this is still “stupid tech tricks” but I don’t care because it’s adorable.

The Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskine: paper sketchbooks and journals get connected
I legitimately want one of these for a lot of reasons. I’m curious how effective the “improved registration” actually is however. Also if the stickers don’t reliably help you tag stuff it’s pretty much useless.

Meet the OwnFone: a customizable mobile phone that epitomizes simplicity
Yet another piece of technology for The Wire: 2027. Can’t wait to see the criminal scenarios that play out with a network of these things as the only form of communication.

As much as BLDGBlog is entertaining when it’s talking about actual architecture I always find the shit about infrastructure way more interesting since they have a way of making all the invisibile stuff there visible in the most interesting ways.
