Other Ten Percent 8/16/12

Aug 16 2012

Hey, did you know that moving sucks? Fun fact: it does! Especially when your roommates start demanding you have your entire room cleaned out two weeks before you’re due to move and no matter how many times you politely say “that is unreasonable” they send you another passive aggressive note every 12 hours pretending like they didn’t hear you and not being entirely packed already is terrible behavior. On a related note. I am really glad I never have to see these people again in two weeks. Oh hey look it’s the internet.
let’s play the floor is lava! on alternating tiles! in an 8×8 grid! look if you don’t like my rules you don’t have to come over anymore
So I am posting this because it is an amazing Dinosaur comic but also because Ryan North has completed his EPIC page by page commentary on the novelization of the film Back to the Future which is one of the interesting projects based off of one of the least interesting books of all time. There is now a record for that and this blog wins it.

Facedeals by ad agency RedPepper provides a new,…
Hey, here is a question I find it amazing that 50% of all start-ups never seem to ask. Who the fuck is this product for? Not how you will make money off of it but who in God’s name would voluntarily interact with your bullshit technology. Because as somebody with a more than passing interest in ambient life-logging I think the person that’s supposed to like this is me and ummmm….why the hell would I want this? I can’t be bothered to check in on 4square but you’ll happily do it for me in exchange for all my personal data. OH BOY. That saves me 2 seconds and all I had to give up was a bunch of private information worth a few thousand dollars to you. This is the electric scissors of facial recognition and I hope it dies in a fire but Jesus Christ is it ever the tip of the iceberg when it comes to products nobody wants that somebody figured out how to monazite.

A Beautiful Time-Lapse Video of Dubai – City on the Move
Oh hey, it’s our monthly high-quality video of an urban space going either really really quickly or really really slowly. Glad we met that quota once again.

An Adorable Series of Photos of Small Dogs With A Napoleon Complex
When did I become the person totally okay with a series of dogs dressed up in outfits. Because I’d like to say it was when we started dressing them up as Napoleon but if I’m being honest with myself it’s been true for a while now and that really, truly scares me.

As I said I’ve begun packing stuff up to move (wait, did I say that? I think it was implied) and this tutorial is super helpful and 100% accurate.

Starfield is an installation by Lab212 where a swing is used to…
Meanwhile on the other end of the tech product spectrum we have stuff I REALLY want but which is absolutely impossible to make any money off of. 99% of all technology falls into one of those two categories and that is why capitalism is doomed. Thank you and good night.

HOWTO make a school computer lab for free with “broken” computers and free/open source software
Wait what there are more links? Oh hey look here at this one. This seems like a pretty reasonable solution to that problem. We’ll just take all the discarded tech from people making stuff nobody wants and use it to make things nobody will buy for free.

Visualzing 3D printing statistics
Oh hey, and 3D printing is still a thing that is, as usual, ever-growing. Maybe we’ll make it out of all of this alright after all.

Check Out This Awesome Dancing of the Day
Unless we can fool them into thinking we’re one of them somehow. Aaaaaaaaaand scene. That’s how you create a narrative out of half the OTP entries for a day with absolutely no plan or preparation. Thanks everybody, I’ll see you tomorrow.
