Other Ten Percent 8/10/12

Aug 10 2012

Man seriously, did somebody flip off God on Sunday on behalf of mankind or something because almost everybody I know has had a pretty shitty week. At least it’s basically over now. That’s…really all I have to say on the positive end of things.
Advertising supplement from 1880: sweet typography
One of two super cool typography posts in today’s OTP.

Lights Out
A lot of short video entries in today’s OTP. I wonder if there’s actually a cycle to these things on the internet or if some days I just don’t feel like reading anything and filter down to videos or something. I have no idea how I’d ever go about testing that however so whatevs.

Do fonts affect people’s opinions?
The other cool typography post, with bonus Errol Morris. It’s the pay-off to that weird optimism/pessimism quiz he did a little while ago and it turns out it was actually about fonts. Turns out those actually matter. Who knew? Besides Nikki who I was kind of posting this for but who, obviously, saw it way before I wrote up today’s OTP.

We don’t talk about the woman with no arms in the woods [Afternoon Reading]
I got some good feedback on the previous sci-fi short story this week (though not so much the video) so I thought I’d try another

Simulacra, Video Projection in an Abandoned Brooklyn Church
Hey so here’s a question. Is there a mailing list I’m supposed to be on to GO to one of these things? Because as much as I enjoy projection mapping it seems weirdly like a genre everybody I know enjoys almost entirely through videos in the internet. It seems like the sort of thing people should be promoting before it happens slightly more often. Again though, I maybe just missed a newsletter sign up.

Short PBS documentary about Glitch Art
PBS’s online budget seems to have had an extra 0 or two added on to it this year or something because it seems like every week they’re putting out one of the best short videos on the web.

GUEST INFORMANT: Chip Zdarsky
It’s been almost the whole week since anything resembling a webcomics roundup. Thankfully this vaguely NSFW (language) comic is worth the wait and pretty much sums up my feelings on ebooks and regular books.

Roto-a-Matic retro vending machine injection molds toys while you wait (video)
I wonder what percentage of my kid’s toys are going to be made to order. I’m guessing the 20-50% range but I suppose that entirely depends on when I have a kid. Chris, Kelly, can you guys like start a spreadsheet about this for me?

Ballad of Poisonberry Pete (short animated video)
I’m not going to pretend this is all amazing (for starters it seems like it needed to be 2-3 minutes LONGER. Which is weird for an animated short.) however the sheer number of pastry puns and general pie jokes they manage to fit in 5 minutes impresses me enough to get put into OTP.

Okay for some reason Evernote doesn’t want to import my last link of the day and I’m too lazy to go and ape the style manually so instead BOOM you get Betty Draper looking pissed instead.
