Other Ten Percent 7/31/12

Jul 31 2012

Okay so as it turns out fixing everything I want to fix with OTP is hard so today is NOT today where everything changes but whatever I don’t think you guys mind too much now that the newsletter is actually showing up in your inbox again. Let’s get to the linking and the describing of things instead of focusing on all the things I didn’t do this weekend. Jesus, get off of my back. Who are you my mom?…Okay so yes technically one of you is my mom but I’m talking to the rest of you who are not my mom? Hey, links.

The contents of vintage and modern absinthes
A really old, pre-OTP Ars Technica article about the modern and historical chemical make-up of Absinthe. I don’t think anybody who reads this blog regularly could possibly have a problem with me linking this. Also after my faux defensive thing up in the intro I’m apparently ACTUALLY defensive about today’s links or something?

Notes from DEFCON and DEFCON Kids
Every year I remember that DEFCON Kids is a thing and think it’s like the coolest thing ever and then I promptly forget as soon as DEFCON is over so the next year I can go “woah woah woah, there’s a DEFCON Kids? AWESOME.”

Stunning Photos of Electrified Plants by Robert Buelteman
I always feel really bad when I have nothing to say but “this is really pretty.”

The inspiration for Heath Ledger’s Joker
Sooooo apparently Ledger’s joker was based on Tom Waits in super old interviews and now that I know that I can’t unknow it and Tom Waits is infinitely more terrifying.

PopFab Episode One
So “3D printer in a suitcase” doesn’t really impress me and I passed on this the first time I saw it but I do find it interesting that “So simple even the idiots in airport security don’t flip out about it” is now a major DIY tech selling point and that the absolute cutting edge of well designed web-video seems to be demo videos for DIY tech. I have no idea what either of those things mean but I still think they’re interesting.

Animated 8-Bit Montage of the Summer Olympic Games
Well between this and the short clips of the opening ceremonies I’ve seen online I think I’ve watched about all of the olympics that I actually need to. Instead I think I’ll just keep vague track of how many medals the US won and then make fun of NBC.

Kuratas, the 13-foot mech: unleashes your inner Ripley, costs $1.35 million (video)
Okay sooooo I need to bother $1.35 million dollars. If any of you say you don’t want this to then we aren’t friends anymore. Not because I can’t be friends with people who don’t like this but because everyone likes this and I won’t be friends with a LIAR. Also, if I could nerd out for a second the mech influence here is pretty clearly the Tachikomas from the Ghost in the Shell TV series (which is by the way much more interesting and much less filled with bullshit metaphysics than the movie) and not the mech suit from Aliens.

An investment fund that makes trades based on superstitious beliefs
So, an investment algorithm art project. How do I keep almost coming up with these ideas before somebody else does without ever ACTUALLY coming up with the idea before somebody else does?

Build a XBMC Media Center with a $35 Raspberry Pi
So since Nikki and I are moving in together I’m trying to figure out how exactly I want to organize all our media. She seems to be taking charge of the audio end of things but I’m doing video. This looks like an interesting possibility but I’m still leaning toward jailbreaking an Apple TV and throwing XMBC on that instead. So basically this post is actually just me asking everybody what they use as a home media center.

Destination: Cocktails – The Traveler’s Guide to Superior Libations
Oh hey, a book about cocktails that has a signing at one of my favorite (if not my single favorite) bar in the city. Yes I do believe I will be going to that thank you.
