Other Ten Percent 11/8/11

So, as soon as I wrote the last OTP I figured out that I didn’t really want to do that anymore. If I’m writing things that are 1000 words long I’d like that to lead somewhere that OTP just doesn’t seem to be leading anymore. So NEW FORMAT AGAIN. This time the idea is that these things should be half formed ideas that should take me no more than 15 minutes to write up. This means they’ll be coming at an irregular pace and appear in the afternoons sometimes but they should be coming a little bit more frequently than the old OTP format. Today’s entry is actually about the direction I think OTP should be headed in.

Like all good broadcast formats now that OTP is collapsing I think it may be time to have it be more of a discussion. Whenever I posted things I always kinda wanted to know what my friends thought of them and its been largely successful on that front. Posting links to OTP got stuff out in the ether of our social circle and inevitably it would drift back around and I’d hear somebody saying something really cool about, say, AR. That’s died off a little because I think people have been reading OTP a little less but also because I kinda know what the group has to say about regular OTP topics. So I think I’d like to have more of a debate where I come across an interesting topic where I want to hear specific friends of mine discuss the issue and then I set that up.

As a for instance I kinda wanted to hear a 2nd wave/ 3rd wave feminism discussion about the New York Magazine articles discussing the history of Ms. and the state of the feminist blogosphere (which is a word I’m bringing back precisely because of how stupid it is) the problem is that the people I want to discuss those stories might find it awkward to debate the issue publicly. Probably because of how awkward it is. So I’m trying to think about a format that would really facilitate that.

I think it might, weirdly, look something like this but I’m still hazy on the details.
