Other Ten Percent 9/30/11

Sep 30 2011

Going to be a short entry today. I had to run from work to go see Jens Lenkman at the California Academy of Sciences with Nikki. In my defense I’ve written over 2200 words in the last 24 hours for work so if you’re looking for more content from me you can still find it by searching for my byline on PC World.

Imaginary Image Blog
Oh my God this is maybe the best idea anybody has ever had. I know I say this a lot but I am angrier than I have ever been that I didn’t think of this first.
WARNING: You’ll be depressed that these images don’t actually exist almost immediately.
NOTE: I mean this thing is so good that it went Viral on its second day in existence. That is unheard of these days.

At Moscow’s Alternative Hair Show, hairstyles you would never be able to pull off
Here is Nikki’s verbatim reaction to this link. “Oooooh. Ooooooooooooooh. Oh I want that. …What?” I’m going to go ahead and say that that is probably the only appropriate reaction.
WARNING: Crazy hair styles.
NOTE: Seriously they’re crazy. I’m fairly certain that some of these beehives qualify as tesseract spaces.

Handy Flowchart for Choosing Among NPR’s Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books
So this is both hilarious and ridiculous functionally useful.
WARNING: I’m fairly certain the position of the Doomsday Book is just trolling.
NOTE: Though it’s a pretty good troll.

Who killed videogames? Beautifully written account of behavioral economics and social games
So I decided to make up for the fact that there wasn’t a lot of content in OTP by giving you a link with a TON of content. This really brilliant piece on social gaming also happens to be something like 10,000 words long. I promise you however that it is worth it to read the whole thing.
WARNING: Depressing for the gamification crowd.
NOTE: It is kinda weird how quickly I turned around to being TOTALLY cynical about that. I still think there’s a lot of potential for applying game design to other aspects of society but I think that’s just being interdisciplinary and not changing the world through like…gameful governments or something.

The Dude Who Invented Evertythingâ„¢
In a week filled with great dinosaur comics this was probably my favorite, if only for panel six which features a catch-phrase from God that I plan to use ALL THE TIME.
WARNING: Contains God infringing on copyright though I guess if you think about it he’s the REAL author.
NOTE: Speaking of a thing that’s been invented. T-rex sticky notes.
