Other Ten Percent 3/21/11

Mar 21 2011

Guys I have a problem and that problem is that I am going to be ridiculously busy until around the start of May at which point I’m just going to be hella busy. I have my huge final project coming up and then I have to justify that final project so that they give me a degree and PCWorld is starting to give me the work of a staff member and not an intern and in the middle of all of that I’m doing OTP. Something’s gotta give and I think it’s going to have to be this. But I don’t want to just have OTP stop happening because it’s probably my longest lasting project…ever. Even if I’ve gotten a bit tired of the format of late it’s still a useful archive of a lot of things for me and I like having it around. So here’s what I’m proposing: for the month of April I’d love it if some of you guys would step up and volunteer to do OTP for a week or so. You don’t have to post the same kind of links I’d post (in fact I’d kinda prefer if you didn’t!) and I’ll format it all once you send me the tags and links and commentary, but I think having a series of guest weeks would be a nice middle ground between me killing myself with work and a month-long hiatus on the project. Anyway, we’ll have 2 weeks to think about it. Shoot me an e-mail if you’re interested.

*Art* *Japan*
Manabu Ikeda
Can I say for a moment that I’m getting real sick of graphic designers “helping” with cool looking posters about giving aid to Japan. I considered dropping this for a moment since the commentary especially seems kinda flippant about the connection between the apocalyptic imagery and the actual situation in Japan but in the end I decided the art was interesting enough to be worth posting anyway and at least it wasn’t some 37th insufferable minimalist save japan poster.

*Photoshop* *Jokes*
James’ Face
I want to believe this is not just a hoax but the Facebook comments are kinda too comically perfect for me to be that gullible.

*Economics* *Celebrity*
Berkshire Anne Hathaway
More evidence that the rational free market is FUCKING INSANE.

*Video Games* *Recontextualisation*
The Dorklyst: The 6 Greatest Videogame Theories on the Internet
Spell Check may not know it but recontextualisation IS a word dammit, and a useful one at that. Especially for this post because that Super Mario Bros 3 theory just BLEW MY MIND.

*Kinects* *Creepyness*
Kinect meets a Pufferfish display, produces wonderfully creepy all-seeing eye (video)
Man if I only had the time I would totally rip this off for my project.

*Video Games* *History*
The Story of Oregon Trail
It was really disappointing to me when I got older and figured out that if I just started out as a banker I could basically just buy my way out of everything. Yet another way that game was realistically bleak. Anyway, have a history of history’s most famous history game.

*Architecture* *Creepyness*
The Creepiest Hospital Grounds in Manhattan (Arkham Asylum in NYC?)
I don’t know why I wasn’t expecting a visual tour of Bellevue from Scouting NY. It’s kind of inevitable if you stop to think about it.

Webcomics Roundup
It was a really strong friday/weekend for webcomics in general but the award has to go to Wonderella for making a joke about the comically bad new Wonder Woman outfit and I think maybe a super moon reference. Timely
