Other Ten Percent 12/19/13

Hey so I solved the mystery of how some people can respond to these e-mails and some people can’t. Turns out nobody can respond to these e-mails but some people just add my gmail address to the send field when they respond to OTP and so it goes through to me and looks like they responded to the newsletter sooooooo I’m an idiot. Here are some internet links though so yaaaay for that.

Why I want Bitcoin to die in a fire
So I’m slightly less passionate about all these ways that bitcoin sucks, mostly because I’m pretty sure most of these are also reasons bitcoin’s kind of self-defeating as a currency. That said, I also TOTALLY AGREE with everything that’s being said here about why bitcoin sucks. I kinda thought it was hilarious that Almost Human had somebody pay for something in bitcoin in 2040 this week since I think there’s a better chance we’ll be paying for shit in gold bars Ron Paul style.

Filmmaker Creates Lavish Car Commercial to Sell His Battered 1996 Nissan Maxima
I’m actually kinda amazed how good this is. I mean there’s a shot here and there where you can tell it’s one dude in his garage with a mediocre camera and a projector but overall this guy manages to completely capture car commercial aesthetics for like…50 bucks.

These people will learn why King Midas’ corpse is the ultimate weapon
Ryan North’s career you guys. This is what being artistically successful looks like for people my age and the more I see of it the more I’m totally fine with that. Obviously I kinda wish MORE people could be artistically successful in this way but I think they’re going to be. I think that’s coming.

Plant intelligence
I know I got started saying it as a joke you guys but seriously when taken as a collection of facts trees are incredibly weird and a lot of that applies to basically all plant life in general.

Great Concept Art for the Science Fiction Museum We Desperately Want

The Moon’s tiny art gallery
Woah woah woah? We’ve already got space art? I mean naturally we’d fuck it up and be jerks about who gets to profit from space art. But space art you guys! Space. Art.

Why I Am Not Coming In To Work Today
Man this is an excuse form I really could have used from late 2006 to mid 2008. I think I would have checked off every single one of these boxes somewhere in there except the ones for media that didn’t exist yet.

VFX reel breaks down Thor 2’s epic prologue battle
Thor 2 was a really weird movie you guys. I had forgotten it had a prologue battle. It was a really weird movie. People are going to look back on this era of the blockbuster when everything had to be locked into a certain structure to get financed but none of those structures made any sense and they’re going to be deeply confused. None of that has anything to do with this video really. I just thought the video was cool.

Paul Rudd Shows the Same Bizarre ‘Mac and Me’ Movie Clip Every Time He Is a Guest on ‘Conan’
Man this is a great day for bits I drove into the ground in 2006. I mean this thing is pretty funny viewed in a row and it adds a kind of rake gag effect to the proceedings but the real brilliance of this joke is the gap of months or even years between him doing this. It’s like a much smarter version of my old theory that “do you know what the secret to comedy is?” gets funnier the longer you wait to say “timing” because when he does this he doesn’t have to remind people he did the set-up 5 years ago.
