Other Ten Percent 12/12/13

Dec 12 2013

Now it is Thursday to you. What day is it to me? You will never know. Unless you look at the timestamps on these stories in which case…wait. Damn. Okay new criminal masterplan: NOBODY LOOK AT THE TIMESTAMPS.

Samurai Gunn Everybody
Earlier this year I went to a miserably busy party for the indie gaming scene that kinda sucked with the exception of the four people I knew there and this game. This game reminded me of the pure joy of playing Smash Brothers as a 13 year old except you need to explain even less to people learning for the first time.

Fly with eagles in these breathtaking bird-cam videos
There are, as I have repeatedly argued, some upsides to the fact that everything’s going to have a camera attached to it before I’m dead. I’m arguing that at least partially because I don’t think we’ve got a lot of choice in the matter so at least we can enjoy the bird-cam footage.

First Impressions: Helix is Syfy’s best new show in years
I’m also suddenly on board for this as well. Is my cold shriveled pop-cultural heart suddenly growing three sizes?

PlowNYC, New York City’s Official Interactive Snow Plow Tracker
Guys. I kinda miss snow. I know that sounds smug when I’m not actually DEALING with snow and I’m sure that if I had to deal with snow for more than like 2 days I’d get sick of it again but I miss stuff like this, just the ambient knowledge that the snow is going on and the city’s pushing back against it, often literally.

Design Fiction: Alex Cornell, “Our Drone Future”
Simultaneously too weird and not weird enough as a viable future for drones at different points but as a sci-fi short it’s pretty fantastic which is…rare for design fiction. Narrative isn’t really their strong suit.

Amazingly Beautiful Advertisements for Gotham City’s Weird Companies
I think my favorite thing about superhero comics is that the shared mythology means there’s all kinds of crazy shit you sorta have to roll with as you’re creating a new story. I mean obviously crazy shit is a relative term in a story that HAS to be about a crazy guy in a black bat costume fighting crime to avenge his dead parents but over the years Gotham has become a weirdly populous place full of shipping magnates and defense contractors and black market fences who look like flightless birds that also run nightclubs and while you don’t technically have to deal with that stuff since comic book continuity is somewhat elastic it’s always there just off frame informing whatever you ARE writing about.
