Other Ten Percent 12/10/13

Dec 10 2013

Not going to lie to you guys, I’m kinda out of practice doing these. It’s sorta weird when I don’t have an immediate NEED to do it every day and can put it off. Feels more like I’m just throwing my voice out into the void which, of course, has been true the whole time, but now I’m noticing and I don’t HAVE TO notice so I get lazy. I’ll either get into the swing of things or burn through my buffer and just do things the old way though so it’s not that bad.

Golden Ratio on Film: The math in There Will Be Blood’s cinematography
At first you’re wondering how much of this is intentional and how much it simply conforms to a largely instinctive understanding of satisfying aesthetics, then you realize the vast majority of it is probably the latter, then you don’t care anymore because it’s still super satisfying to see just how well it lines up and the fact that it wasn’t planned actually makes it more interesting.

Watch an entire building transform into a playable Rubik’s Cube
I wonder how long it’ll be before we have to scale nostalgic games and puzzles up to the level of cities to get attention.

Thrilling Six-Minute Mashup of 258 Movie Trailers From 2013
I really loved the first minute and a half of this, then I kinda got bored with it but there’s sort of a rake effect thing that goes on as it switches genres.

The inept mind-control experiment that led to 20 years of CIA funding
I think my favorite part of every MKUltra story is the usually unstated but obvious fact that the CIA really really wanted mind-control and telepathy to be real to the point that they just kinda kept throwing money at it even though even they knew it was almost certainly never going to work. It’s like if DARPA spent billions of dollars on building mech-suits because even though they’re obviously impractical come on! Mech-suits!

Dead Media Beat: historical video games
I like that I initially read the complaint that playing in virtual worlds in the future would seem empty as an academic plea for games to be understood within their original cultural context before I figured out that they meant it would literally be empty, you won’t be able to understand what playing WoW is like without millions of other people playing with you.
