Other Ten Percent 12/5/13

Dec 05 2013

Man, I’m kinda bummed today and I have absolutely no idea why. Please note that by the time you’re reading this that won’t be true so it’s not really useful information even if you were planning on doing something with it but here in the past I’m just not feeling ANYTHING that I’m doing today. That bodes well for these links right?

Honey Bees detecting Cancer
Man if we kill off all the bees just in time to learn they were the secret to immortality that’s really going to suck.

Build a Simple Time-lapse Camera with a Raspberry Pi and a Coffee Tin
Yet another thing it would be cool to do but I’m absolutely certain none of us are actually going to bother with.

The Real Hero of the Harry Potter Series
I think the only part of the last book I really LIKED was the part where it became startlingly obvious that this was true.

GetCreditCardNumbers Generates “Real” Numbers for Use in Free Trials

NYPD Urges Bar Owners Not to Serve Santa at 2013 NYC SantaCon
Yeah I’m totally fine with being part of the SantaCon backlash at this point. San Francisco kinda doesn’t need MORE events where everybody dresses up in stupid outfits and gets drunk enough that somebody dies. Like we literally run one of those every three weeks or something at this point. So now I guess I’m suddenly on the NYPD’s side? That feels really uncomfortable outside of watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Stabilized Zapruder film in HD
Soooooo nsfw and two weeks late but it’s still fascinating if really morbid to watch this in a way where you can actually figure out what the hell actually happened.

Every Death in George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ Series Visualized with Colorful Bookmarks
Wow he…he really does just kill people constantly. This is also by the way the best argument for a physical book I’ve seen in ages.

Vintage Photos Reveal Century-Long Obession with Dressing Up Pets
People have dressed animals up in outfits throughout history and in that time every single dog in an outfit has looked confused and every cat has looked pissed about it.

Design Fiction: “Patently Untrue” by Bruce Sterling
This is probably the clearest explanation of Design Fiction I’ve ever seen and it really makes it clear why I find the concept of design fiction so much more exciting than the execution.

Hunter Shoots Robot Deer, Faces Charges | News from the Field |…
Considering the number of robots we’ve killed already while they’re relatively rare I’m not sure we’re going to have an ethical leg to stand on when the robot overlords show up.
