Other Ten Percent 12/4/13

Well that’s irritating. The process of sending things to other things that I automated to do OTP in it’s current format sometimes breaks if I’ve got the evernote window where I compose each day’s entry open in another tab and unlike Google Reader, Feedly doesn’t just let me trip the same read it later trigger on a blog post multiple times when that process screws up. I could probably get around it by setting up automation with a slightly different trigger and then re-triggering all the posts I’ve collected that way but finding an automated solution to a one time problem is a coder habit I’m pretty much fine with not having. Instead let’s do an old school OTP where I just link to each of the things we’re going to talk about in separate paragraphs. Don’t get used to this though because it takes like three times as long as doing it the regular way.

So I’m sorry but I’m just going to keep posting these Pete Holmes Ex-Men sketches until he stops making them. This new one with Ice Man’s kinda extra fun because the comic actually knew how lame his power was so it kinda kept how powerful he was at making things cold until he was actually too powerful to keep around (at one point he was able to just sap all the heat out of everything within like, a mile of him instantly which pretty much makes any threat…not a threat) so instead they killed him by having his…wait where is everybody going?

Guys, there is a Center for the Study of the Drone. They have a newsletter. A newsletter from the Center for the Study of the Drone. Guys…I’m worried you don’t need me anymore if they just post a few comedy videos to liven things up.

So I continue to not quite know where this season of Scandal is going or how I feel about it but I think we can all agree that knowing anybody on that show in real life would be the most confusing thing that ever happened. The Toast wrote a story about that!

Okay seriously the BBC is kinda kicking Google’s ass on the web experiments lately. The only example I have on hand is this interactive timeline of the entire timeline of the Doctor’s travels for all 50 years of Doctor Who. It’s not exactly packed with super impressive web tricks but I like it as a data visualization problem. My favorite parts are where it tries to figure out what to do with the times the doctor just gets flung entirely outside of the universe.

Man, I knew about the Great Airship Hoax but I’ve never actually seen it framed in quite this way before. Nice work making everybody terrified of the sky Jules Verne.

Woah woah woah, Adblock plus now takes away all of Youtube’s suggested video crap if you want it to? That’s…that’s going to be a big change to my web browsing habits.

Oh hey, it’s a short documentary on privatized space travel and what it’s whole deal is.

Automated systems to create personalized objects based on javascript and user input are the new cheap crap from ikea.

While the concept of a Glass Concierge that looks over your virtual shoulder and gives you life advice mentioned at the end here sounds kinda fun at first, isn’t the WHOLE POINT of Google Glass to have Google’s anonymized machine brain doing that job for you? I mean if we just wanted some random guy looking at a video feed of our lives and telling us what to do the technology’s been there for that for quite some time now it just hasn’t sounded like a really pleasant experience to most people.

Finally, here’s a guy talking about how machines need to become art in 1938.
