Other Ten Percent 11/29/13

Nov 29 2013

The hardest part of this format is figuring out what day comes after the last entry I did. Seriously. I spent most of the last post thinking Thanksgiving was on the 29th for some reason and only realized my mistake at the last possible second. Figuring out what day it’s going to be a week and a half from now is really hard you guys. Feel sorry for me.

Modern humans are still carrying Neanderthal viruses
If we all die of Neanderthal viruses you gotta admit that’d at least be way cooler than most of the ways we could have gone out as a species.

How Long Can Humans Hold Their Breath?
Seriously every time I hear how amazingly long humans can hold their breath it seems like the record’s gone up another two or three minutes.

San Francisco’s flying car, circa 1920
Maaaaaaaaaaan, why does past San Francisco always seem so much cooler than present San Francisco. Besides the art scene in the late 70s (which was so interconnected you could run into David Byrne at the supermarket and accidentally become best friends with Basquiat by the end of the week) past New York mostly just sounds like you were way more likely to get killed and also strip clubs were more accessible.

The Chemistry of Baking Delicious Cookies
The flaw in my Thanksgiving coverage becomes apparent as I present to you a week of things you kinda wish you knew in time for Thanksgiving. I hope you all enjoy hearing about the things you should have bought people on Black Friday sometime in mid January.

I do not have time to let my RSS reader update before I let you know of the glory of Texts from Cormac McCarthy…which is weird because you’re not getting this till the end of next week.

Dave Holmes being a pretty alright dude is one of the few things I can agree on with the time traveling 15 year old version of myself that has been brainwashed by my enemies from the future into believing I’m a sellout and sent from the past to destroy me so this list of reminiscences from him about 1998 is one of the few bits of 90s nostalgia I’m fine indulging in.

That last one got weird and I genuinely can’t tell if it’s because the whole 15 year old me thing needed to be way simpler or was just a poor idea for a bit in the first place or I actually needed to go into MORE detail on the mechanics of me being at war with a 15 year old version of myself or what. But now we’re stuck with it because our last link is Leigh Alexander’s brilliant article about how exhausting the console wars cycle has become for everybody in gaming and 15 year old me would be SO ENRAGED by the idea he would some day stop caring about such things. You legitimately wouldn’t even need to brainwash him, just tell him I kinda don’t give a shit Nintendo’s losing this generation of the console wars and he’d volunteer to kill me.
