Other Ten Percent 11/21/13

Nov 21 2013

Not going to lie, I’ve been doing a LOT of these today and I’m sort of out of conversation topics as a result. Mostly I’ve just kinda been doing coding experiments and considering various implications of writing a heavily time delayed link aggregator. Also, finding all these links obviously.

A Dramatic Glimpse of Mars as it Appeared Billions of Years Ago
I am going to go out on a limb and say mars probably looked as much like this millions of years ago as Dinosaurs looked like the ones in the natural history museum when we were kids. Have they fixed that yet? Do they have feathers on them when you take your kids to that now?

Augmented Reality: a projection drone
I’m technically getting around my ban on projection mapped stuff here since this is a DRONE that just happens to do projection mapping and those are still fair game.

Design Fiction: Futurama 1939, New York World’s Fair “To New Horizons”

“High-frequency trading (HFT) accounted for about half of US stock-exchange trades in…”
So if robots finally kill us all it’s going to look way more like this than Terminator. Also how long do we think we’ve got until there are no actual human traders on the trading floor of the stock exchange at this point? Like, anybody more knowledgable about economics want to give me the over under on them lasting past this decade?

Coin
I kinda wanted to skip this because it is the first worldi-est startup gadget maybe ever but viewed through a lens where you kinda just accept that about it it’s kinda cool anyway.

Femslash Friday: Olivia Benson, Alex Cabot, and Hope
I…did not know this was a thing. Did you guys watch enough SVU to know this was a thing? Is this enough of a thing that it makes SVU interesting to watch for it or no?

This List Contains Everything You Need to Host the Perfect Party
Oh good, somebody else posted about this list because it is redonkulously exhaustive. Like I tried to come up with a less stupid descriptor of how exhaustive it is but then I double checked my figures and nothing short of redonkulous was appropriate.

A Day In the Life of an Empowered Female Heroine
This story also doubles as a list of all the things that go wrong whenever I try to write a female character and I don’t know what sins I’ve committed in this life or a past one to deserve that fate but whatever they were I am truly sorry for them.
