Other Ten Percent 11/19/13

Nov 19 2013

Man, what even is the deal with Tuesday? Who does Tuesday think it’s fooling? Just because you’re not monday doesn’t mean you’re getting off the hook that easy Tuesday. Just because I have no idea where I’m going with this doesn’t mean you’ll get away with what I’m presuming is some dastardly scheme or something? This really didn’t pan out. Links.

Sean Bean is playing Macbeth in a dark new reimagining
Is this a new thing? I literally can’t keep my macbeth projects straight anymore. It seems like theres already 80 Macbeth projects and all of them feel like they should be staring Sean Bean if they aren’t.

Supercut of ‘The Hunger Games’ Archer Katniss Everdeen Killing Other Movie & TV Show Characters
Like all Supercuts I actually like this one kinda has a rake gag thing where just when I think I’m sick of it it becomes really funny again.

Synthetic animals will save the planet
Guys, I’m not normally one to take the side of a dystopian sci-fi argument. I think we’re going to be bros with whatever robots we build, civil society will gain as much as it loses from a world where surveillance is the norm if it handles it correctly, and if we ever figure out how to prevent aging humanity will work that shit out. We’re all agreed this is going to kill us all and we should flip out though right? It’s not the genetic engineering part I’m worried about obviously because I could kinda give a fuck, it’s the bit where we’re just making our own biosphere which…that seems like an AMAZINGLY bad call considering our track record with that in the past. I mean, as established, we can’t even figure out what food we’re supposed to put in our bodies and we’re trying to engineer healthy living for weird ass animals like the Platypus? Come on.

Convert money to happiness with expensive wine
This is both incredibly comforting and INCREDIBLY depressing depending on how you’re looking at it.

Why Aren’t We Talking About How Much Tim Curry and Dave Grohl Are The Same?

Sorting algorithms visualized
When Bruce Sterling called for an aesthetics of satisfying code from the New Aesthetic (a task which I now realize was never going to be of even minor interest to them when they could still reblog pictures of drones and call it a provocative political statement) this is what he was talking about. There’s something oddly satisfying about the different ways these sorting algorithms go about their business that’s even more strangely the SAME kind of satisfying that well structured stories or music or art tends to be. It’s kind of Godel, Escher, Bach-esque but…not really besides being multidisciplinary and math heavy. It’s going to be somebody much smarter than me (hopefully but not at all certainly while I am still alive) that actually explains whatever underlying thing it’s all operating on that underlying thing is absolutely THERE and you can see it and hear it in this video. I mean the one that starts around 40 seconds in almost functions as the absolute atomic form of three act structure.

inFORM, 3D Display Can Form Moving Shapes and Interact with Physical Objects
the one downside to this kind of time capsule approach to OTP is I sometimes genuinely forget if I blogged something or not already and I think I actually just ended up talking with Nikki about it because while I do love the video here I’m kinda disappointed by all the writing around this thing that’s much more heavy on the “you can see what we’re going for and what it will be like in the future” and no guys don’t be like that. Who cares about the future? Right now you’ve got weird virtual hands that are made of pegs and let’s embrace the weirdness of that shit instead of trying to skip ahead to where we’ve got enough tactile pixels, or whatever bullshit we’re going to call these things, that the weirdness goes away.

Nightwing joins the growing DC TV universe of Arrow
I bring this up not to mention again that Arrow’s actually pretty good as far as superhero shows go, but to bring up a topic that we seem to have overlooked until it was too late: why have we allowed so many fucking people to be named Steve McQueen? Because seriously it seems like every month or two now somebody casually brings up Steve McQueen doing something in the modern day and I’m all “ummmm Steve McQueen?” and then they’re like “no, a director with the exact same fucking name who isn’t related to him at all” and then I’m all “oh yeah sure I’m the idiot here.” and then like two weeks later somebody’s reminding me of Steve McQueen being on The Vampire Diaries and I’m like “I’m pretty sure Ian Somerhalder wouldn’t let anybody on that show look better than him on a motorcycle.” and they’re like “no no no, I mean the least interesting character on that show who’s played by his grandson or something I guess but everybody just calls him Steve McQueen too?” How has this happened? How, in a world where David Cohen is apparently such a hot commodity that a dude had to change his middle initial to X in order to keep his own name in Hollywood, are we just letting people be Steve McQueens without some sort of an up or down vote beforehand? Also, hey I guess this means Batman’s a thing in the Arrow universe…that’s cool too I guess.

The Moment Factory
It’s probably a bad sign that “the most fascinating thing about NiN” stories are never about the music but I still feel like I should like Trent Reznor more than I do considering he beat Radiohead to distributing albums online for free, created a really compelling ARG for one of his albums and now he’s doing this.
