Other Ten Percent 10/30/13

Oct 30 2013

Happy 75th anniversary of Orson Wells terrifying the state of New Jersey everybody. I’ve had that fun fact in my back pocket for so long it seemed like a shame to do nothing with it but now that that’s out of the way I can finally back-burner the War of the Worlds obsession after a few io9 articles, almost a decade of parties and a graduate degree. Oh hey, I actually did get 10 things for this this morning. That’s great. I was kinda hoping it was all going to be comics or halloween based entries today based on the first two entries but I abandoned that pretty quickly.

20th Century Headlines Rewritten to Get More Clicks by xkcd
I’m not usually a person that cares about language getting “watered down” by overuse but if I read one more headline with the word Epic in it that doesn’t have two hobbits throwing a ring into a volcano in the article I’m going to stab somebody.

Hark, a Vagrant: Spooky Postcards
Kate Beaton is back! Yes this is going to be my commentary every time Kate Beaton posts a new comic so long as they keep being irregular occurences.

This ingenious video converts equations and diagrams into real life
Okay, pretty impressed by the attention to detail here. I was worried they were all going to be as lazy as the snowflake one early on. THEY’RE NOT.

50 greatest innovations since the wheel
I’m glad the sextant made the list. Between this and the Sleepy Hollow plot about George Washington’s Sextant (and between that and the bible I really hope they just have to track down the secret codes in every item Washington ever owned) it finally seems to be getting it’s moment in the sun…besides solar noon. That was a sextant joke.

The Minister’s Tree House, A Massive 80-Room Tree House in Tennessee
I can’t quite articulate why this thing being shut down as a fire hazard is one of the funniest things ever to me but it is. Some combination of it being so huge, made ENTIRELY of wood and being built on the instruction of God who just totally blanked on the fact it would go up like a tinderbox.

The Barge Mystery: Floating Data Centers or Google Store? | Data…
So we’re all agreed that if any company was going to just take over the earth it’d be Google right? They’ve got the right combination of capital, innovation and weird libertarian philosophy to just shut down all the electricity for everybody that didn’t join their new technocracy.
