Other Ten Percent 10/15/13

Oct 15 2013

Alright then. It was a super slow day on the internet but I eventually found ten things so here we go.

a spooky tale from the spookyzone, presented by your host, Spooky Spatricia.
I love the idea that in the 1950’s with a real knowledge of the intricacies of the phone system this is a slightly less stupid story than it might appear to be at first glance but it’s STILL a stupid enough story that only children that aren’t really paying attention would have fallen for it when it was invented.

Design Fiction: the Vessel project
Space arcs are never going to happen but projects imagining space arcs seem likely to keep being a thing until we die so why don’t we enjoy them for what they are?

““The FBI has not been able to get to Ulbricht’s personal Bitcoin yet,” wrote Hill. An FBI…”
Is there like a statute of limitations thing where he will eventually be able to get this stuff back because the short story about him just waiting them out until they have to give him his bitcoins back and then discovering the market for them has collapsed after a decade would be pretty spectacular.

Hello newsies fans in my audience which is actually a slightly more efficient way of saying “every girl I went to college with.”

Lulu – an app for girls to anonymously rate boys
So I’m not really interested in if this is a good idea or not (like basically all things that let you anonymously rate other humans it’s an AWFUL idea) but I do find the gendered implications of this thing hilarious. How many 15 year old boys do you think are discovering they’re mens rights activists based purely on this thing?

Meanwhile, speaking of angry commenters who have stupid points my favorite part of this comedy sketch about firing Wolverine from the X-Men because he’s useless is all the Marvel nerds who are SO UPSET somebody might find Wolverine useless.
– – – – –
Then, on the topic of Transmedia Storytelling: Marvel is apparently planning on four separate television shows and a miniseries. That seems insane to me but I am really looking forward to watching them try.
– – – – –
Then, on the subject of things nerds have been saying in comments sections for almost as long as comments sections have existed: Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are not sufficiently pretending to not be making out enough anymore so the internet has just decided they’re making out.

Also, everybody, everybody, AVClub did a Homestar Runner retrospective. The fact that one of the Homestar creators has written for Gravity Falls isn’t the least bit surprising. The fact that the other one did that crazy movie about the real life crazy guy that impersonated an officer and demanded a fast food manager interrogate and strip search a female employee is…a bit more out of left field.
