Other Ten Percent 10/4/13

Oct 04 2013

Oh hey, yo, hi there. I have waited until the evening to do this and I guess I could pretend like that was because I wanted to see if anything was going to happen with the government shut down that let me follow up on that joke I did with Wednesday’s OTP without totally abandoning the premise that I’m considered a nonessential government function but like I’ve read more than half a news story about this so I think it’s pretty obvious nobody’s falling for that obvious lie. I was playing with a kitten. We are babysitting the kitten and I spent all day being like “oh hello kitten” and “don’t knock that over kitten” and “oh I guess we’re taking a nap now? Oh you’ll let me pet you that’s cool” and “oh wait that was all a trap so you can bite me.” Kittens you guys!

This is Monsieur, the Robotic Bartender — Design News 10.02.13
Oh hey, I’m 90% sure I ended up seeing this at Barbot one year. As the only actual corporate drink making machine at the event it was of course broken the entire time under very very nice lighting and I felt really bad for the guy next to it. It seems like they’re really worked out the kinks.

Hip-Hop From the Future: Inside Deltron’s First New Record Since 2000
It really is weird how nostalgic an album set over a millinium from now feels and if anything it feels like it’s nostalgic for like…nostalgia. There’s a hint of that in the new Monae album as well a sense that what we’re really nostalgic for is a vision of the future that doesn’t seem depressing.

How L.A.’s “Last Bookstore” evolved from post-apocalyptic to magical
So when I mentioned that I’d been to half the sci-fi stuff in that sci-fi tour of LA that Omni Reboot did this was one of the things I HADN’T been to and it was the one I was immediately kicking myself for missing out on.

if your spell check doesn’t think “supergross” is a word, i respectfully suggest that your spellcheck has, up to now, lived a charmed life
I had actually never considered this about blackmail and now that I know it I’m kind of shocked it hasn’t been used as some weird libertarian defense of blackmail. And now that I’ve Googled “Libertarian defense of Blackmail” I see that it has been used for that any number of times and now I am sad about people and all the things that can be wrong with them.

The World’s First Mobile Inflatable Concert Hall ‘Ark Nova’ to Tour Quake-Damaged Japan
For a mobile inflatable concert hall this thing looks way nicer than most of the non-inflatable non-mobile concert halls I’ve been in recently.

Stephen Hawking’s party for time travellers
As somebody who’s planning to host a time travel party of his own I’d like to point out that this only proves that Time Travelers know Stephen Hawking throws kinda lame parties. I guarantee my time travel party will have way more games and several cool ladies. I might keep the ominous ticking clock though that was a nice thematic touch.

How long will Twitter be around?
Every time I remember XKCD What If exists I feel stupid for not linking to it more often.
