Other Ten Percent 9/26/13

Man so I spent the day consuming a hell of a lot of really interesting media but as a result I have…not exactly been writing up a storm. I feel like that’s okay though sometimes I kinda need to figure out what the hell is going on in the world if I’m going to write anything and hey, that’s kinda the entire point of this whole exercise. Ordinarily I can fit in a little time for both things each day but today was a day with a hell of a lot of long reads to go through. Three of them in fact are worth your time enough that I’m adding them in as links for OTP. So the only other thing to really discuss is the pilot to Masters of Sex which I watched today and which is the best new drama of the fall for people who enjoy period dramas with a strong feminist subtext, or Lizzy Caplan naked which….now that I think about it makes it a pretty good Litmus test for if I even want to associate with you anymore.
New York Introduces Text Stops to Encourage Drivers to Pull Over Before Using Mobile Phones
This is kind of brilliant. I mean this is obviously just a rebranding effort but it’s actually a kind of brilliant one recontextualizing public spaces for use in a behavior that basically doesn’t exist in order to get it to exist. I mean I have really low hopes it’ll actually work but as a thing to try I love it.

Google launches ‘Constitute,’ a new tool for designing governments | The Verge The…
I really enjoy Google’s insistence on just doubling down on disruption even as the rest of the tech/start-up world finally seems to be tiring of it. As everybody else realizes the only things left to disrupt are actually going to be really really hard to disrupt Google’s just like “fuck it, disrupt the human lifespan, disrupt the nation-state as a political unit” I wonder when they’re finally going to get bored enough to try and disrupt the global economy. I could actually see them pulling that one off.

This astounding video just took projection-mapping to the next level
I keep getting convinced that this is just some after effects bullshit when I watch this because while it’s physically possible to do this I just…it’s SO well done I feel like it’s gotta be a trick somehow.

Joseph Gordon Levitt, Stephen Merchant, and Jimmy Fallon Face Off in a Lip Sync Battle
You know I was going to declare that Stephen Merchant basically won this out of the gate but JGL manages to stage a pretty impressive come from behind victory here.

New TV show tells the story of young Jim Gordon, before he met Batman
Oh hey they finally managed to figure out they should make a Gotham Central TV show now that Joss Whedon did it for their greatest competitor. I really wish I could give network notes for this because all I’d ever send is “More Noir!” I wouldn’t even be watching the footage they send me first.

Beijing’s “mystery rooms”: single-room funhouses
Oh, hey, that’s what’s up with these things. I’ve been seeing them around SF for a while now and kinda thought they were a weirdly scaled down Sleep No More but they actually make way more sense now that I know they’re this thing.

And now the longreads. Let’s start with the one that’s kept me from babbling endlessly about the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot: A seven page long interview with Joss Whedon about…basically everything. A lot of selections from this have been popping up for a while including his controversial opinion that The Empire Strikes Back ends badly since it…doesn’t end, an opinion that’s had a lot of nerds very angry with him because nerds are awful. The actual content of the interview though is…weirdly philosophical for Entertainment Weekly which turns out to be great because an interview trying to get him to talk about the projects he’s working on at any length seems doomed to be deathly boring.
Let’s do some compare and contrast because today also had me reading a seven page long interview/article about Hillary Clinton from New York magazine that’s distinctly NOT philosophical at all despite the interview subject really clearly wanting to operate on that level. In fact for a magazine that just got an interview with Hillary Clinton the whole article seems distinctly disinterested in things Hillary Clinton actually said to them which…given that Hillary Clinton’s current political limbo pretty much keeps her from saying anything about the topics you’d want to write about makes a certain amount of sense but lends a really weird heft to the article which seems to wander off into the backstabbing politics of the Clintons inner circle before remembering it has Hillary Clinton saying something vaguely related to the Clinton Foundation or something somewhere in their notes. …Why am I ragging on this thing so much? Anyway it’s a really interesting portrait of the way Clinton is framing herself as she winds up to a seemingly inevitable (my favorite anonymous quote in the article is the one that suggests that Hillary Clinton’s belief she has any say over if she runs for president is kind of adorable and that some invisible inexorable law of political nature will conspire to FORCE her into running) presidential campaign.
Also are you sick of reading about GTA V and how it is simultaneously the “greatest game of all time” and kind of awful? Well too bad because Grantland has one more that’s worth your time and takes time to ponder the generational stuff going on with the kind of weary response the games seems to have inspired in most games journalists.
