Other Ten Percent 9/25/13

Sep 25 2013

And now it is time for another day of Other Ten Percent. Since I’m writing this up before I watch the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (I’m trying to see how long I can keep up using the actual title before I go insane) pilot I have no real TV news to discuss. Oh, Trophy Wife is pretty good so I’m thinking of doing a “sitcoms with West Wing Alums” night for TV club if I can just bring myself to torture everybody, including myself, with watching Mom. Anyway, links.
The World’s Oldest Newspapers Still Being Published Today
I learned this last weekend that the America’s Cup is the world’s largest trophy shaped award and as instantly ammused that we apparantly keep track of that by shape now.

Two great long reads about fire, science, and the human lives caught in between
Is it just me or do BoingBoing headlines sound more and more like the taglines to movies lately? I mean this one would be a pretty awesome movie but it’s still kinda blatant.

A History of the Last Meal, and the “Intimate Relationship Between Food and Death”
I’m into longreads about esoteric topics today…I mean I guess I’m into that every day but I usually don’t have two “go read this thing about a topic I have never mentioned before thats thousands of words long” posts in one day.

If this is actually true it’s probably the only action of the NYPD I can really think of in the last decade that I’d just wholeheartedly support.

The voices in your head are culturally specific
While this shouldn’t be particularly surprising if you think about it the exact nature of the cultural changes to the voices in your head is pretty awesome.

The Dr. McNinja Omnibus is here!
Jesus, there have been 500 pages of Dr. McNinja? On one level I guess that’s not surprising since I’ve been reading it since I lived in New York but on the other hand that’s…that’s a lot of webcomic considering the thing is structured like a traditional print comic.

Moonrise Kingdom typography
Just one of the many reasons that movie is kind of criminally under-rated. I mean not that anybody hated it really but it’s weird that it didn’t get more awards attention.
