Other Ten Percent 9/24/13

Sep 24 2013

So I had one of those days where I’m not sure that anything that I wrote is really going to show up anywhere or be all that useful but where I wrote A LOT and so I still feel weirdly good about everything? Let’s see if that extends to Other Ten Percent or if I’m kinda burnt out after a day of writing a lot of words in other places. Looking at the first few links here I’m afraid it’ll be the second option but who knows. Maybe this’ll just start rolling and I won’t be able to stop.

Spy-gadget photos from Berlin’s Stasi museum
Hiding a pinhole camera lens as a button in a trenchcoat is probably the single most stereotypically spy gadget in the world that would actually have a decent chance of working. I’m imagining some super paranoid MI6 agent going “maybe the guy in the trenchco….nah, too cliched.”

Getty Dubs, Stock Videos Augmented With Hilarious Dubbed Sound
The second best joke based on adding a new soundtrack to Stock Video footage I know of after the commentary Tracks on Adult Swim’s website. Adult Swim has actually been doing a lot of original video content for the web lately and I…don’t know what’s up with that. No regrets though especially if it’s producing stuff like this and giving the Superego Podcast a chance to do stuff like this.

What The Monopoly Properties Look Like In Real Life
Like everything tangentially related to Monopoly this is far more interesting than actually playing Monopoly. Also, wow this…actually pretty much conforms to the boardgame exactly. Like, you’d think the passage of time might make some of the streets go from actually just linearly being worst to best in terms of property value over almost a century but NOPE.

Terminator 2 reenacted entirely with lines from Shakespeare
I am frankly amazed by how well this works.

A short story about 2023 London, where temps bid on hourly jobs
Every once in a while a near future sci-fi story comes along that’s just depressingly plausible enough that I immediately find the most improbable thing about that future and latch onto it for dear life so I can avoid thinking it will in any way accurately predict what the world will be like in however many years. The last one was a short I think for some weird sci-fi issue of Fortune or something about a reputation economy that essentially turned all of society into a high-school popularity contest where you essentially got shunned out of the economy for not mindlessly agreeing with the cool kids. That one kept me awake at night for a while. I really felt the need to do that with this one though because JESUS CHRIST does this ever feel like what my life’s going to be like in a decade in a way I really hope is just me being really tired or something.

Strange Historic Photos Of Intelligent Animals
Oh my God I want to ride bumper cars with a bear. WHY ARE WE NOT ALL RIDING BUMPER CARS WITH BEARS ALL THE TIME. That alone is proof that we do not live in anything close to the best of all possible worlds. Nice try 17th century theologians but you’ve once again been bested by a bear riding a bumper car.

Honest Scarecrow, A Critical Parody of Chipotle’s ‘The Scarecrow’ Ad
Sometimes I wish Funny or Die didn’t have the money to do everything they wanted to do because while I really hated that sanctimonious Chipotle Ad I sorta feel like this would be funnier if it didn’t actually have do a musical parody and just straight up played the ad with huge flashing FEEL FEELINGS signs over the blatantly emotionally manipulative parts.

Crowdfunding real-life, citywide choose-your-own-adventure stories
Yeah okay I’d get in on this. If nothing else it seems like a way better format for tourist guides than anything we’ve got going.

8 Headlines That Sound Like Upworthy, But Are Simply Attempts To Express My Withering Contempt For That Collective of Neo-Liberal Douchebags
Oh hey, apparantly today’s miny theme is “making fun of sanctimonious crap people posted on Facebook recently.” Can somebody do a parody of Louis C.K. explaining why we’re not sad enough because phones so we can make this a hat trick?

974 People Simultaneously Playing a Custom ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Level
Man the full scale of how brilliant/batshit this is can really only be experienced by cranking the resolution of the video way up and full-screening it. Anything less than that and it just sort of seems like a big mess but man when you get it up to 1080p you…holy shit I finally sound like everybody else describing HD sports and it’s about a bunch of people playing Mario. Of course it is.
