Other Ten Percent 9/19/13

Sep 19 2013

I can’t say I’ve been insanely productive this week or anything but getting back into daily habits, including the daily vines Nikki and I have been doing, has really improved how productive I feel like I’ve been at the end of the day. Like just doing this by noon has vastly improved how much I feel like I’m getting done. Here are some links I’m writing up at 11am. Also ummmmm holy shit this is my 1000th post on OtherTenPercent.com that’s…that’s a thing. I’d honestly totally stopped counting and just noticed at the last possible second that was going on. I mean considering we’ve missed a few daily posts I actually wrote up and I did this e-mail only for almost a year before archiving it on the site it’s not really a milestone of any importance. But still. Shit.
Go Pro on a soaring eagle
At this point it’s pretty much a given that every single human being will be ambiently recording from their POV by the time I die but I do wonder if I’m going to make it long enough for us to get all the animals too.

It’s Fall, Fuckfaces
At this point the best part of “It’s Decorative Gourd Season Motherfuckers” is watching it slowly rise in public opinion every year as we slowly reach consensus that it’s the best thing McSweenies ever published. Oh who am I kidding? The best thing about that article is reading it again every year.

Spitbank Fort: mid-Victorian fortress island turned into a hotel
I love that the default answer to “what do we do with this weird old structure that has no functional use anymore is just “let’s make it into a hotel for weird rich people!”

The Shaq baby boom
I wonder how many babies have to be born with a certain name for it be basically a demographic certainty that somebody’s going to be playing college sports with that name.

Master Pickpocket Apollo Robbins on the Art of Misdirection
I really like this but I do worry nothing with this guy will ever be as good as the long form article about him.

Disneyland’s Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy Filmed in Night Vision
I once rode Space Mountain at Disney World and for some reason they had to turn the lights on in the middle of our run through the ride and it was simultaneously way more interesting and way more terrifying. For one thing you can actually see how close your head comes to smacking into stuff that makes them constantly tell you to keep you hands inside the little cart all the time. Anyway my point is this is way more terrifying in night vision mode than the mode where you can actually see the laughing holographic skull yelling at you.

Mirage Men: the story behind the UFO story
What the actual deal is with UFOs always turns out to be way more interesting than UFOs to everybody but UFO obsessives.

And since that’s only nine I guess I can just talk about a thing which I’ve been way too lazy to do most of the time lately so let’s talk about fall TV. Go watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine. That’s basically all I’ve got to say on the matter right now. It’s basically a textbook example of how you structure a pilot and while some of the side-characters obviously still need to be developed the core trio and their relationships is better established than I’ve maybe EVER seen in a sitcom pilot. Seriously, if I was teaching scriptwriting I’d teach using this thing it’s that well constructed. It’s also really fucking funny as a result but, man, whatever.
