Other Ten Percent 12/31/13

So I feel like 2013 is the year that the traditional format of OTP finally fully broke. It’s been looking kinda long in the tooth for a while now but I just took a week off with no warning and nobody complained because honestly, what are we doing here? I’m flattered you guys still show up for the commentary but when I started this it was actually kind of a service to find stuff that was worth your time. Everybody aggregates links everywhere now. It’s become the default mode of online journalism. That’s basically been the story of journalism since I moved to SF and not only is it common it’s kind of passed its expiration date this year. Oh hey so I got up at 3:45 this morning to make a flight back from Seattle and how do words work again? It’s the end of the year now so let’s do some off-format entries. I’m cleaning out my RSS reader and planning to talk about some possible directions for OTP I’m going to try in the new year before I probably just give up and revert to the standard format like I always do but that’s for tomorrow. For now it’s a year end best of best of lists list!

Even after all these months I still find myself accidentally typing in the google reader address like it’s still a thing. I miss you buddy. Anyway, here are the links I found on another RSS reader like a traitor.

Hey so I solved the mystery of how some people can respond to these e-mails and some people can’t. Turns out nobody can respond to these e-mails but some people just add my gmail address to the send field when they respond to OTP and so it goes through to me and looks like they responded to the newsletter sooooooo I’m an idiot. Here are some internet links though so yaaaay for that.

Welp, hit the mid-afternoon writing wall so it’s time to take a brief break to write up OTP. How are YOU doing people I talk to through a newsletter. Get back to me on that by e-mailing back to this address which several people have insisted doesn’t work but has worked once or twice so maybe it’s like a magical realist e-mail address that only sends if your intentions are pure or something?

Welp, got 90% of my Christmas shopping done in one day so that’s at least a kind of productive. Writing OTP is another kind of productive and I’d like to indulge in that kind now.

Not going to lie to you guys, I’m kinda out of practice doing these. It’s sorta weird when I don’t have an immediate NEED to do it every day and can put it off. Feels more like I’m just throwing my voice out into the void which, of course, has been true the whole time, but now I’m noticing and I don’t HAVE TO notice so I get lazy. I’ll either get into the swing of things or burn through my buffer and just do things the old way though so it’s not that bad.
