Other Ten Percent 11/15/13

Nov 15 2013 Published by under Daily Posts

Now it is Friday and…yeah I’m bored with this bit with the intros. I’m writing these further and further out into the future to have some banked if I ever need to take a break but also just as an experiment to see how far I can write these in advance before they become utterly useless. Also to see if maybe it then wraps back around to being useful again somehow?

Now it is Thursday. Or is it? You have become unmoored from your sense of time as the endless, sprawling past seems to have colonized the future. How does time work? How do links work? You cannot remember. I have been listening to too much Nightvale and it is starting to show. But I’ve also been reading a lot of Mallory Ortberg jams so I am unafraid.

Party Cheat Sheets: Entertaining Infographics for Holiday Event Planning
I actually don’t have any holiday events I’m planning but I certainly wish I had a lot of infographics on how to make easy snacks for your parties two weeks ago. I am sure some of you will be having parties in the future where that would be useful.

Krampusfest 2013, Demonic Krampus of European Christmas Tradition is Coming to Los Angeles
The Krampus totally feels made up right? Like, obviously, it IS made up like all mythological creatures but what I’m saying is it feels like we made up that it’s European thing. Like it feels like there was an episode of Taxi where they made a joke about how Latka was really into Krampus instead of Santa and they had this whole mythology for the crazy made up evil Santa the wacky foreigner was afraid of and the whole thing just got out of hand and we decided eastern Europe ACTUALLY did that somehow. Is this just me?

De Profundis Ad Astra
Okay these photos of super old sci-fi conventions are adorable. I think my favorites are the one where it looks like Walter Koenig is totally about to get laid toward the top and the lady in the middle who seems to be cosplaying as Cookie Monster in 1971. God bless you lady in a home-made Cookie Monster suit. History will remember you as a visionary.

Oh, hey, 11/12/13. One more of those next year and then never again until we’re all either dead or uploaded into sweet robot bodies. We saw the new Thor on Sunday. The franchise remains an interesting mess held up by Tom Hiddelston’s ability to turn Loki’s complete lack of a coherent motivation into a feature somehow. I think my favorite non-Loki part is the bit where Natalie Portman wanders through an M83 video before she decides to be an idiot and touch a millennia old evil obelisk that (as Jane pointed out) periodically traps her in a SFX sequence that looks like a perfume commercial. Like I say, the movie’s kind of a mess but, especially in the last act where it seems to just go with the fact that it has about 80 plots going on and none of them make any sense or have anything to do with each other, it’s a fun mess.

Blizzard Announces New ‘World of Warcraft’ Expansion ‘Warlords of Draenor’
I have never been more fascinated by a game I don’t really want to play. The decision to basically put an base management sim inside of a failing MMO kinda smells of desperation on one level (really most of this news does including convoluted time travel so everybody can hang out with cool characters they already killed off) but it’s also kinda fascinating how willing to just abandon “core principles” I’ll be interested to see how it turns out, play the beta for a week or two and then go on with my life which is…probably not what they’re hoping I’ll do.

How physics ended the nighttime radio war between the US and Mexico
Man radio in the 30s was weird. There were also a whole bunch of like local radio stations in the dustbowl that were kind of understandably preaching communist revolution. Basically the 30s in general were super weird and we do it a disservice by just summing it up as “that time everybody was poor and then Hitler.”
