Other Ten Percent 1/31/13

Hooray for quasi palindrome dates! Okay so today is dedicated purely to writing Adventure Time stuff. I mean, after writing up OTP. Weirdly that doesn’t seem to sap my energy for fiction the way that writing up stuff I actually get paid for does.

Other Ten Percent 1/30/13

Guys, I slept! Though judging by how OTP went yesterday I maybe should not sleep more often. Sure it was kinda insane but it went by quickly and I thought it worked pretty well for the most part.
Ask a Victorian Lady Lounger
Man, people really knew how to title books in the 19th century. Both these book titles are now just hilarious album names though and the anonymous authors are both pretty spectacular band names.

Bad Lip Reading of the Day
We can all agree now that this is what Beyonce was actually singing right? I mean I know I JUST posted a thing that said she wasn’t actually lip synching but…I changed my mind.

Montage of Kickstarter Project Videos That Start With “Oh Hey, I Didn’t See You There”
Well, looks like it’s time for me to retire that joke. I’m a little offended that I didn’t actually get into this video but I guess they’re limiting it to videos for Kickstarters that “didn’t fail.” Fine. See if I care.

The CW greenlights a reboot of the classic British TV series Tomorrow People
I am so down for this. I mean it’s only ever going to be supernatural level “so bad it’s good” sci-fi but…it’s the Tomorrow People so that’s pretty much the best you were going to do anyway. Teleportation is pretty much the best superpower though so a bunch of sexy teens who can teleport is kinda the best possible show for the CW to greenlight. I am assuming their sexy anyway (though that would be a SHOCKING DEVIATION FROM CANON) and this isn’t the first CW show in history where they’re just going to grab a few moderately attractive girls and a homely dude or two.

Other Ten Percent 1/29/13

Other Ten Percent you guys! I write it: you read it. I am trying slogans out today I guess because I’m operating on like 5 hours of sleep and I’m SUPER out of it as a result. Oh hey look it’s my old friend links from the internet. Hi links from the internet! Why don’t you give everybody something to look at so they don’t have to focus on how insane I am sleep deprived.

Other Ten Percent 1/28/13

So much comedy. Seriously I am so glad I didn’t have a show tonight because 4 sketchfest shows in three days was probably enough. All of them were awesome by the way. Thrilling Adventure Hour and Paul F. Thompkins with Friends Real and Fake were special standouts. I also didn’t get much writing done but that’s because I was kind of out of it all day. Hopefully I’ll do better here on Monday and writing a show a week and editing a show a week seems like a decent pace actually. Let’s see if I can keep it up once the episodes aren’t 11 minutes long.

Other Ten Percent 1/25/13

Jan 25 2013 Published by under Daily Posts

You might have noticed I didn’t write an Adventure Time episode yesterday. I kinda got into a tech writing mode in the morning and remembered some extra work I should have done earlier so I decided to do that instead. Then I was super out of it and didn’t manage that either. Weird day. I spent most of today at a press thing for an MMO. It was a super weird day because while I learned a ton about this game between embargos and unfinished content and stuff they just plain weren’t supposed to be talking to me about I kinda have no idea what to write about it that anybody would really care about. PR for games is weird. You’re basically watching a rough cut of a movie a year out from its completion and then telling people if you think the movie’s going to be any good or not. “It could be, the director said it will have a lot of things good movies have and there’s a really cool part I can’t tell you about where a thing happens. Anyway we’ll see later when the movie comes out. Okay bye.” Here are some links.

Other Ten Percent 1/24/13

Jan 24 2013 Published by under Daily Posts

On Monday I wrote 3/4ths of a Children’s Hospital episode. Today I will write 3/4ths of an Adventure Time episode. These accomplishments sound more impressive when you don’t know those shows are 11 minutes long. Making my accomplishments sound more impressive than they are is my new jam. Join me for so many links it rolled over to a second digit won’t you?

Guys! Amazing productivity tip! Force yourself to not do whatever fun thing you wanted to do today until you get all the hard stuff done first. Lifehacks you guys! This amazing tip worked so well there’s a full first draft of the Children’s Hospital script up at Million Words today that I wrote on Monday. It’s not anywhere near done (the first three scene don’t QUITE match up with the concepts I went with for the rest of it) and I’ve got to edit it down in general next week but it’s written. Today I’m basically done with all my PCWorld work for the week. Also I found all these links for you.

Other Ten Percent 1/22/13

Jan 22 2013 Published by under Daily Posts

I’m writing this up early because once I’m done and I shut down my computer I’m going to marathon write a first draft of the Children’s Hospital script I’ve been kicking against. I am warning you right now that even the first draft will probably not be very good as it will contain multiple [a joke goes here] notes and probably since it’s an absurd time travel story I’m trying to tell in 11 minutes there will be internal continuity issues to work out. Here are links you can read instead of (or in addition to!) reading that.
REM’s “Losing My Religion” shifted into a major scale
I have never actually been a huge fan of Losing My Religion (as a song of course, as a way of life…) and changing it to major key doesn’t actually fix that. It does however make the video immensely more amusing and it’s just downright technically impressive.

Design of the Week: Caged Heels
So 3D printed fashion is still clearly in its LOOK WHAT I CAN DO phase and that’s cool and everything. They kinda need to move out of it though and one of the things I’ve noticed that’s maybe a way forward but maybe way to gimicky is stuff like this where there’s kind of a weird optical illusion based on the way you thing shoes are constructed and the way this thing is ACTUALLY constructed. Also can 3D printed fashion stop concentrating so much on 3D printed heels because I’m pretty sure we haven’t yet had the material sciences breakthrough that keeps that from being HELLISHLY uncomfortable.

Guerrilla indie feature film shot at Walt Disney World
I wonder if the business plan for this thing actually had a section where they wrote down “and then Cory Doctorow covers it on BoingBoing and we go viral” weirdly I kinda don’t want to see this movie UNLESS they were that mercantile about the whole thing, it would imply a level of craft and dedication that’d outweigh “guerrilla indie feature” in my pro/con list.

Ars Electronica prize: call for entries
I’m writing this up early so I could probably find a post with more content if I waited until the end of the day but I want to knock this out early and leave some time for stuff to aggregate for tomorrow’s entry since it’s a holiday and 90% of all posts are going to be about the inauguration. There’s really only one reason I’m posting this and that’s that there’s a really solid code art community joke by Bruce Sterling at the top of it. The Ars Electronica entry pr stuff is…okay if that’s what you’re in to.

Other Ten Percent 1/18/13

Jan 18 2013 Published by under Daily Posts

Well I got some PCWorld writing done and I’m getting this done by 3pm AND I also got at least a little fiction writing done though I have to reengineer some stuff because the script is turning into a smaller scale story where Owen accidentally kills all his friends ancestors after he travels back in time…In related news I continue to think about how Children’s Hospital is a weird show because that actually ISN’T the kind of premise that’s too out of the episodic structure or budget to be written on spec. Also I’m thinking about the New Aesthetic a lot again lately and so there are more stories about stuff in that direction than in recent history. Wait actually looking at this I cut all of those with like, one exception. Thankfully there are also other links. Continue Reading »
