After returning from our 3 day weekend (well, 2.5 day) I came home and posted my room up on Craigslist…since then I have been managing the flow of about 40 people every hour that e-mail about the room. I now retroactively forgive everyone that didn’t respond to me on Craigslist. Jesus Christ. The saddest part is that like half of these people are actually really cool. Continue Reading »

Man seriously, did somebody flip off God on Sunday on behalf of mankind or something because almost everybody I know has had a pretty shitty week. At least it’s basically over now. That’s…really all I have to say on the positive end of things. Continue Reading »

Blarg. Non productive week of annoying bullshit continues to annoy me. Nikki hasn’t exactly had a great week either so I think we’re getting the hell out of dodge this weekend in the hopes that whatever the hell is ruining out weeks is afraid of bridges or something. It’s worth a shot. Oh hey, links.

I hate life way less today. Still, not my favorite week. I have to run off to dinner with Jane soon so I’m probably going to rush this one a little. Sorry. Oh hey look I found some links for you guys.

Neal Stephenson’s Some Remarks, a remarkable essay collection
Well. I’ll be reading this one soon. Actually now that I think about it I’m a whole Stephenson novel behind since I haven’t actually finished Reamde yet…I should probably…actually read things.

RIP DeAndre McCullough
It may shock you to learn this but Wire creator David Simon can write the shit out of stuff when he puts his mind to it. Maybe it’s all those years of writing really good stuff paying off or something?

Humans of New York, Fascinating Photo Blog of NYC Street Portraits
Oh hey! This project is the work of somebody I went to high school with. He’s been posting it on Facebook for a while but it’s started blowing up lately. I’m glad to see him getting the recognition he deserves.

In-N-Out Delivery Service Offered in San Francisco by burgerto.me
Reviews on this one are mixed and while I applaud the idea of the whole thing I sort of imagine I’ll stick to grabbing Super Duper burgers considering I’d have to wait AN HOUR for the burger.

The Magical Video Store Where You Could Rent Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman and Cronenberg’s Return of the Jedi [Video]
I was a huge fan of this short story when I first read it (actually heard it on a sci-fi podcast but whatever) back in 2007. I can’t tell if the short film really does it justice since it’s 22 minutes long and I am both lazy and busy. However, if you don’t like the video just go ahead and read the story. It is worth your time.

Volcano killed thousands of British people in the 13th century
Again. “Mystery volcano nobody’s heard of killed thousands of people thousands of miles away.” SEEMS LIKE THE KIND OF THING WE SHOULD BE LOOKING INTO.

Breaking: Joss Whedon confirmed as writer/director for Avengers 2, plus a Marvel series
Wait no I take everything back it’s suddenly the best week in history. I’m really hoping he goes for an Agents of SHIELD premise on this TV Show. It’d be amazing to have a weakly show that was just these random unpowered guys in suits trying to fight supervillains with occasional celebrity cameos from the Marvel Movies stable of superheroes.

Any Suffiently Adanced Civilization is Indistinguishable from Nature
This week in new solutions to the Fermi paradox we have the triumphant return of incredibly advanced bio-technology as the end state to technological progress. Maybe it’s just the Babylon 5 fan in me (they were BIG into biotech on that show for the everyone that didn’t watch it) but it kinda makes sense to me. I mean short of becoming so advanced you just straight up leave the universe it’s probably the best explanations for why we’re not picking up a lot of radio signals.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour
New York friends! One of my favorite podcasts is coming to New York and that is impressive since it is both far away from their usual home of LA and also the show itself pretends to be an old-time radioshow which means there are a LOT of cast members. Considering how much fun I had with Nikki going to the live show of another one of my favorite podcasts I’d imagine you guys will like this one as well.

Hi. I hate everyone and everything and the last 24 hours have been a nightmare of wastes of my time and assorted sundry bullshit to the point where I am honestly this close to not even bothering with OTP today. I have wasted at least 4 hours wandering around trying to get one errand done and failing and only managed to get about 3 hours of sleep night and the sooner I move out of this apartment the happier I will be.

So far I’ve got to say that the biggest problems with the automated scraping of links out of my RSS reader are: 1)That I suddenly have to be VERY careful about which links I think are good enough to make the list. I used to be able to narrow it down to 20 or so and then toss those off until I found ten that I liked by closing tabs. Now however it is hours later and opening up each of the links involved can be kind of a pain. 2)It makes me kind of lazy and I wait until the last minute because suddenly I don’t need to care about formatting all this junk. Sooo that’s why I’m rushing to add content. We’ll get the hang of this stuff though you guys and it will usher in a bold NEW AGE of me sending you links in the morning. Links like these. So I’m still sorting out the EXACT way I’m going to be using it and formatting it but it looks like using IFTTT to automatically scrape all of my RSS entries and Twitter links that I actually find interesting into one location is going REALLY WELL. You’ll notice that the format is a little bit different and it should probably be a little bit wonky for the next few days. I’m going to try and get it so that the title once again links directly to the article instead of being on two separate lines but testing is, for now at least, inconclusive on how easy that is to automate. Once I get the format nailed down I think that I may start doing stuff like adding back the tags and stuff. Who knows. Let’s go crazy up in here. Continue Reading »

So I am thinking there will not be a special coding project on Friday this week and instead there will just be a regular OTP. There are several reasons for this. 1) I promised Katherine a comic like a month and a half ago and because I have used my free time on coding stuff I am exactly 2 pages into that script. Woooo. I’m going to use tomorrow to try and write up a first draft. 2) It is stupid for me to do the coding projects for Friday anyway for a host of reasons but mostly because I need to be doing the work during the Friday-Sunday period where I usually have the free time to accomplish that kind of stuff and doing it on Monday instead of Friday would get me to actually do it then instead of putting it off till Thursday and panicing when I ALSO have work to do that day. 3) I am lazy. Oh hey look here are links to distract you from that last point. Continue Reading »

I got a fair bit done today so that’s some good news but I’m afraid I didn’t come up with a whole lot of links I have a ton to say about. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all good links. Some of them are really good. I just think this is going to be a collection of links where I go “guys, this is neat!” Instead of talking for 400 words about the future of audience experimentation or some other bullshit that I don’t really know anything about but still feel qualified to speak about with authority because this is the internet. Here come those links now. Continue Reading »
